URGENT RECALL

Dr Oetker pulls ready-rolled icing over fears some contain marzipan and could KILL nut allergy sufferers

The baking product has been hooked from supermarket shelves as it contains ground almonds

AMATEUR bakers with nut allergies are being warned to check their ingredients after Dr Oetker withdrew a batch of ready-rolled icing from sale.

A "small number" of its Regal Ice Ready Rolled Icing were filled with marzipan by mistake, prompting the German firm to hook the product from the shelves.

The marzipan isn't mentioned on the label and as the product now contains ground almonds, it could be a health risk to anyone with a nut allergy.

The icing pack has been on sale at Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's and Shoprite for £4.50.

And even though the packaging has a warning on it saying it may contain nuts, the German company says it "isn't suitable" for anyone who suffers with a nut allergy.

The item affected has the barcode 5010301043458 with the best before date of 12.10.18.

Nut allergies are triggered by tree nuts and can cause sickness and vomiting, and in extreme cases cause the mouth to swell leaving the person struggling to breathe.

Anyone who has bought the item can return it to the shop they bought it from for a full refund.

A spokeswoman for Dr Oetker said: "A very small number of packs were mistakenly filled with ready rolled marzipan.

"We are concerned that consumers will be disappointed as it is not the product expected, and whilst the packaging is clearly marked “may contain nuts (almonds)”, the product is not suitable for anyone suffering from a nut allergy."

No other Dr Oetker products are affected, the spokesperson added.

Last month, budget supermarket Lidl recalled three of its snack-sized packet of nuts over allergy fears because the label wasn't written in English.

And rival Aldi had to pull packs of its barbecue flavour coated peanuts as it failed to mention on the label that it contained cashews.

It also had to recall a range of its Just Tasty salad in October which contained milk but wasn't listed on the ingredients.
