Eurovision 2016: Ukraine storms to victory as the UK’s Joe and Jake finish 23rd

Favourites Russia finished third despite being public's choice

UKRAINE’s Jamala has beaten rivals Australia and Russia to win the 2016
Eurovision Song Contest.

The 32-year-old singer nabbed the top spot with her track ‘1944’ at the
Ericsson Globe in Stolkhome, Sweden on Saturday evening.

She said following her win: “I know that you sing songs about peace and love
but actually, I really want peace and love to everyone. Thank you Europe.”

Meanwhile Britain’s entry of ‘You’re Not Alone’ by former Voice stars Joe and
Jake didn’t place as well as expected following a fairly strong judges
round.

The pair dropped from 17th position to 23rd after scoring the second lowest
phone votes.

But the singers remained upbeat and tweeted their thanks for the support.

They wrote: “Two best friends, just had the night of their lives. Thank
you all so much.”

Later they added: “Regardless of the result, our main aim was to make the
UK proud. We hope we did that!”

Twitter users were quick to reassure them on how much they enjoyed their
performance.

One commented on their high points from Malta’s judging panel: “You got
us our first 12 points in 7 years lol we ARE PROUD!!”

Another said: “HELL YES you are our winners!!!!”

Australia’s Dami Im came an impressive second after winning favour with both
the judges and the public.

Russia’s Sergey Lazarev had been the bookie’s favourite and while he did gain
the highest number of televotes, it was too much of a gap after Ukraine’s
huge number of judge’s votes.

But many viewers thought it was Justin Timberlake who stole the show with his
impressive performance on stage.

The nine-time Grammy winner is currently touring with Dreamworks’ latest
animation ‘Trolls’. After singing his classic hit Rock Your Body, he belted
out his latest hit Can’t Stop The Feeling.

Earlier in the evening Graham Norton also
paid a touching tribute to the late Sir Terry Wogan
during the
Eurovision final.

The host called this year’s contest “bittersweet” because it was the
first one since the death of the much-loved entertainer.

Graham, 53, started to praise the late entertainer during the introduction of
Sweden’s 17-year-old Eurovision entry.

He said: “So while the crowd in the Globa arena cheer on their home boy,
I would urge you back at home to raise a cup, a mug, a glass – whatever you
have in front of you – and give thanks for the man who was and always will
be the voice of Eurovision.”

Best bits

Of course, Eurovision wouldn’t be Eurovision without some gentle ribbing.

Some continued to joke about Australia’s place in Eurovision:
