Oscars 2016: Sam Smith dedicates win to gay community in emotional speech

Star beats Lady Gaga to gong with his Bond theme

EMOTIONAL Sam Smith looked close to tears as he dedicated his sensation Oscar
win to the LGBT community during an emotional speech.

The star, 23, won Best Original Song for Writing’s On The Wall, his theme from
Bond film Spectre, at tonight’s ceremony.

Sam beat Lady Gaga’s Till It Happens To You and The Weeknd’s 50 Shades track
Earned It to the gong.

During his acceptance speech, Sam said: “I actually can’t breathe right
now. To all the nominees, you’re incredibly, Gaga, you’re incredible.”

Quoting a recent Ian McKellen interview, he said: “I read an article that
said no openly gay man had ever won an Oscar, and if this is the case, and
even if it’s not, I want to dedicate this to the LGBT community all around
the world.

“I stand here tonight as a proud gay man and I hope we can all stand
together as equals one day.”

However, Sam is not the first openly gay star to win – fellow musician Elton
John won Best Original Song for The Lion King’s Can You Feel The Love
Tonight in 1995, something which Twitter was very quick to remind him about.

Sam also performed the winning song but admitted to BBC Breakfast this morning
that he “hated every moment” of it, adding: “That was
honestly the worst moment of my life. Singing was horrible – I hated every
moment of it. I was so nervous. That’s the truth. I want to say to everyone
at home, we love you.”

Super-skinny Sam looked more dapper than ever on the red carpet as he staged
his own English tea party.

Red carpet reporter Ryan Seacrest made sure that Sam and his creative partner
Jimmy Napes felt right at home by bringing him some British tea to calm his
nerves.

Sam was delighted, but the body conscious star said: “No sugar for me,
watching the pounds. Are you sure this is British milk?”

He then raised his cup and toasted: “To the Queen”.

He uploaded a photo of a banana with the message: “Hope you get lucky at
your after show party”, which he revealed was presented to him by his
father.

He wrote: “Thanks dad for the good luck present.”

Sam’s opponents will be relieved that he won – because it could be a
bloodbath.

He joked: “I’m going to go crazy. I’m going to punch someone.”
