NEW Three Lions striker Saido Berahino is facing jail after being nicked
allegedly drink-driving — at up to 110mph.
Cops tipped off by a member of the public pulled over the 21-year-old Premier
League starlet at 3.39am on the M6.
The African-born ace — who fled from war-torn Burundi aged ten to join his mum
here — could be jailed for up to six months if found guilty.
His run-in with the law near Lymm, Cheshire, emerged after England boss Roy
Hodgson this month twice included the West Brom star in his squad.
Police last night confirmed: “A patrol stopped a car travelling at high speed
southbound on the M6 near Junction 20.
“A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving, interviewed
and was subsequently bailed. He is due to appear at a Cheshire custody suite
early in December.”
The Sun can reveal Berahino’s arrest was in October — two days after he scored
in West Brom’s 2-2 draw against Man United.
He told his followers on Twitter hours after police stopped him that he was
“in a good place #feeling blessed #godisgood”.
Last night he was unavailable for comment, according to his agent.
West Brom were also silent.
The player, who signed a lucrative new contract last December, has been tipped
as a £20million target for Liverpool — and Spurs are also said to be after
him.
While playing for England’s under-21 side against Finland in 2013 he got a
yellow card for lifting his shirt to reveal a message to his late father —
killed in Burundi’s civil war.
Berahino scored twice in the 3-0 win.
Although Hodgson this month picked him for the senior team against Slovenia
and Scotland he did not see action.
Berahino — who was separated from his mother for two years during the civil
war — was earning £850 a week when he first broke into the West Brom team.
He is now on £14,000 a week.
