CINDERELLA star Lily James has been accused of being racist after the film’s Japanese premiere.
The 26-year-old poked fun at the local audience who had trouble pronouncing the movie’s name.
She wrote alongside a picture of her on the red carpet on her Instagram account: “Shinderera premiere in Tokyo”.
She then added: “The final stop on our tour and it was a beautiful cold night, thank you!”
Critics quickly attacked the Downton Abbey star, with one commenting: “Tacky racist stereotype comment is pretty gross.”
Another added: “Not sure if that’s a racist comment or it’s the real name there.”
But fans quickly rallied to her defence to point out that “Shinderera” is how the film is pronounced in Japan.
Lily, who is dating Dr Who star Matt Smith, wore a pink floor length gown for the premiere of the Disney live adaptation of the fairytale classic and was accompanied by director Kenneth Brannagh.
