PETROL could soon hit a six-year low of £1 a litre across the country, according to the RAC.
The average price at the pumps is £1.07 but some supermarkets are already selling at £1.03.
Harvest Energy in Darlington, Co Durham, broke rank last month with unleaded at 99.9p.
RAC motoring group’s chief engineer David Bizley said yesterday: “We’ve seen the wholesale price of petrol and diesel drop by a couple of pence recently. There’s typically about two weeks’ lag in the system.
“So there’s a very good chance that within a few weeks people will be selling fuel at £1.01.
“And then the temptation to move that extra penny or so will be unavoidable.” The last time petrol fell below £1 was 2009, says the RAC.
Tumbling oil prices are behind the drop. Brent Crude is trading at around $44 a barrel, compared with $100 a year ago.
The Sun’s Keep It Down campaign demands cheaper fuel for motorists.
