LONG-suffering Maxine finally gets wise to Patrick’s scheming, but as he
prepares to take his last breath, is it too late?
As the pair plan to renew their wedding vows, Motor neurone disease is taking
its toll on the former Hollyoaks High headmaster and he stuns Maxine by
asking her to help him end his life after the ceremony.
Describing the scenes as ‘heartbreaking’, Nikki Sanderson who plays Maxine,
told Sun Online: “It’s very emotional, very sad and I think doing the
vow renewal makes her realise that she can’t do it; she can’t kill Patrick,
be the person who helps him do this.
“When it comes to the moment she backs out, proclaims her love for him
and [their daughter] Minnie and runs out.”
But the drama doesn’t end there.
“Patrick does come to his untimely death, but we don’t know how, or who,
or when. All we know is Maxine then finds out that Patrick has left a trail
of evidence essentially telling the police, the solicitors and everyone who
will listen that Maxine has murdered him.

“It’s going to be very hard for Maxine to get out of that,” the
31-year-old actress adds.
Convinced that Maxine is back with ex-boyfriend Darren Osborne, viewers know
that Patrick (Jeremy Sheffield) has been recording videos claiming he fears
Maxine is trying to murder him and left everything he has to Maxine in his
will to incriminate her further.
In reality however, Darren has rekindled his relationship with estranged wife
Nancy.
“It’s a little bit of a blow [to Maxine],” Nikki confesses of Darren
and Nancy getting back together.
“She really cares about Nancy and about Darren and in her own way, she’s
quite happy for them to be together. She recognises that she couldn’t be
with Darren, she causes him too much trouble, there’s too much going on in
her life.”
There were tears aplenty on Jeremy Sheffield’s last day of filming both
onscreen and off.
“I didn’t think Jeremy was going to cry,” admits Nikki.
“But on his last day because I was balling my eyes out he did as well and
I was like, ‘aw, bless you, you’re going to miss me, aren’t you!”
Adding: “It’s very sad, we’re all going to miss him terribly.”
And during Jeremy’s leaving meal, Nikki presented him with a touching gift: “I
made him a huge A1-sized canvas thing in a photo frame.
“I split the picture in half in a diagonal and at the top wrote ‘fiction’
then got all of the pictures of Maxine and Patrick of the beatings and the
abuse and everything.
“The bottom half said ‘reality’ and in it I stuck all of the pictures of
me and him on days and nights out together, at awards together, all happy
and smiling so you see the contrast. It took forever for me to make it.
“He got me, Anna [Passey] and Persephone [Swales-Dawson] each a big huge
photo that he had of us all and wrote lovely things on the back.”
So if Nikki had to make a resolution for Maxine?
“To start looking after herself a bit more and stop devoting her time to
everyone and everything other than herself. Maybe taking one day a month to
do something nice for herself.”
Hollyoaks airs Maxine and Patrick’s vow renewals 5 January on Channel 4 at
6:30pm.
