A GANG member convicted over the murder of 11-year-old Rhys Jones fathered a
SON during his prison term.
Gary Kays, 28, met with his girlfriend earlier this year after jail chiefs
granted him temporary release.
He was present as she delivered his second child last month and was freed on
licence days later, having completed half his seven-year term.
The Prison Service defended temporary release, saying it helps prisoners
settle back into the community.
But the fact Kays had a sexual relationship during his sentence will add
further despair to Rhys’s family.
Norman Brennan, a leading campaigner for victims, said: “This cocks a snook at
our criminal justice system.
“It is disgusting an offender in such a serious crime serves only half his
sentence. But to be allowed out earlier than halfway through that term and
do all the things Rhys will never do is staggering.”
Rhys was shot in Croxteth, Liverpool, in 2007 after innocently being caught up
in a gang turf war. Kays had rung Rhys’s killer, Sean Mercer, 18, to
confront rival gang members. Kays was convicted of assisting an offender.
