BRITAIN’S Eurovision hope Engelbert Humperdinck flopped last night as he came
second from bottom.
The crooner came a dismal 25th with just 12 points.
The Beeb had high hopes for the 76-year-old’s ballad Love Will Set You Free.
But even Ireland, who often award the UK good scores, gave us only four points
in the TV event in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Sweden won on 372 points with a dance song performed by Loreen — but the real
stars of the show were six Russian grannies who baked fake bread while
singing live and finished second. Engelbert was even beaten by Ireland’s
annoying X Factor twins Jedward, who came 19th. Insiders blamed his poor
showing on having to perform first, so he was forgotten about.
But after the contest Engelbert was upbeat, saying: “I’ve had many highs in my
career and Eurovision has been a wonderful experience.
“I did the best for my country, the rest was out of my hands.”
Before the show, PM David Cameron and his wife Samantha had thrown their
support behind veteran Engelbert.
As it turned out, the only country we beat was Norway — who England defeated
1-0 in the football last night. A fan in Baku said: “It’s a bad night to be
British — but a worse night to be Norwegian.”
