My son stole my life savings of £45,000 to go on holiday to Spain

DEAR DEIDRE: I HAVE been left penniless after my son stole my life savings of £45,000. It took me years to save and now it’s all gone.

I love my son dearly and would have gladly given him money if he’d asked, but he has made things so much worse by not contacting me for at least a year.

I have messaged him, texted him and sent letters but all to no avail.

I only discovered the theft when my ISA statement arrived in the post. I couldn’t believe the money had all gone. I went as white as a sheet.

I am his 75-year-old widowed dad. My wife died ten years ago.

My son is 40. I also believe that my son and his girlfriend have been using my credit card to the tune of £3,000 while I was on holiday in Spain.

I am completely at a loss as to how I can recuperate my savings. I am also at my wits’ end as to how I can resolve this amicably.

DEIDRE SAYS: Stealing is a crime. No one should be taken advantage of and stolen from, let alone from their own children.

You may have to face up to the fact that your money will not be recovered.

All attempts to contact your son have failed but try again and warn him that if he doesn’t make contact you won’t be afraid to involve the police.
