Do I need a smear test if I’m still a virgin?

READ Dear Deidre Editor Sally Land's personal replies to today's problems.

DEAR DEIDRE: I’VE been invited for a smear test but I’m not sure if I need one as I’m still a virgin?

I had all the HPV vaccines at school. but a few women in my family have had abnormal growths and one had cervical cancer, which makes me worry I could be at high risk.

I’m 24 and I have heard that smears are uncomfortable and embarrassing, which is putting me off.

Even having to tell the doctor or nurse I’ve never had sex at my age makes me cringe.

I’ve fooled around with a few boys but that’s it. I don’t want to have sex just to get it out of the way.

People call me old fashioned, but I’m waiting for the right guy.

My mum says I must go for my smear and I should stop being silly.

Is she right and is there anyone I can talk to about this?

MORE FROM DEAR DEIDRE

DEIDRE SAYS: While it’s highly unlikely you have any abnormal cells, as you’ve had the preventative HPV vaccines, it’s still important to have a smear test - especially if cervical cancer runs in your family.

Smears can be a little uncomfortable, but they’re rarely painful, and a good nurse or doctor will put you at your ease.

There’s no shame in being a virgin at your age.

Be aware that it’s actually a myth that only intercourse spreads HPV. Any type of genital contact can do this, including oral sex.
