When alcohol and cigarettes were ruining my life, you helped me sort myself out
DEAR DEIDRE: ALCOHOL and cigarettes were ruining my life when I wrote to you last year, Deidre.
I knew I was addicted to drinking, and the cost of smoking had left me in debt.
At just 29, life felt hopeless and pointless.
I tried really hard not to drink. I’d manage two days sober, but then I’d find myself drinking again - usually through boredom.
I even went to an AA meeting, but as a young guy, I felt totally out of place.

You told me I had guts to face up to my problem and that there was help out there for me.
You recommended that I contact my GP and call Drinkline (Drinkline: Tel: 0300 123 1110) for free, confidential support.
Plus, you gave me some of your support packs on drinking, stopping smoking and solving debt problems.
Since then, I have managed to cut down on drinking and am finding ways to occupy myself - going out and doing activities I enjoy - so I’m not tempted to drink.
I am even thinking of going back to AA, now I’m really ready to face up to my issues.
Thank you.
