FLATMATE FEAR

Another student in my halls behaves really weirdly – I’m scared

READ Dear Deidre Editor Sally Land's personal replies to today's problems.
Teenage girl leaning against a doorway.

DEAR DEIDRE: ANOTHER student who lives in my halls behaves really weirdly, and I’m scared.

He shouts, slams doors and stares at people. I want to help him, but I also feel I need to avoid him.

I’m 18 and in my first year at university.

I live in a hall of residence with other students. This guy, who is also a first year student, lives in the same block.

He is a real loner and never comes to any parties. He keeps to himself and stays in his room.

But we hear him talking to himself and shouting. And sometimes he behaves aggressively.

What should I do?

DEIDRE SAYS: You don’t know this guy, or what his issues are, and he hasn’t asked for help.

But it’s understandable that his behaviour makes you feel uneasy.

He may have mental health problems, or another condition, or he could be on drugs.

Have a chat in confidence with your student welfare office. Perhaps they can check on him.

You may also like to get advice from Rethink (, tel: 0300 5000 927), who offer mental health support and information.
