From Ed Sheeran to Rachel Riley, these celebrity couples managed to keep big day a total secret
THEY might live their lives in the limelight. but these celebrity couples managed to keep their big day a total secret.
From Ed Sheeran and Cherry Seaborn to Rachel Riley and Pasha Kovalev, here are the couples who managed to say "I do" in much more low-key manner.
Ed Sheeran, 29, and Cherry Seaborn, 28
ED is notoriously private (except for his heart-on-your-sleeve lyrics, obv), so it’s no surprise he wanted his big day to be hush-hush.
After reconnecting in 2015 with childhood sweetheart Cherry, a hockey player from his hometown of Framlingham in Suffolk, in December 2017 he announced their engagement via an Insta post, captioned: “Got myself a fiancée”.
But it was two months after they said “I do” that news of their small December 2018 wedding got out.
They’d tied the knot on his 16-acre Suffolk estate (dubbed Sheeranville), in front of 40 family and friends – no record-company bigwigs or stars in sight.
They are such pros at secrecy, it looks like they’ve taken the same approach to their first baby, reportedly due soon, having kept Cherry’s bump under wraps throughout lockdown.
They said: The groom kept schtum, but a source said: “He wanted no fuss and he wanted it to be something entirely for them – a tiny winter wedding. Cherry wanted to get it out of the way without problems or intrusions.”
Tove Lo, 32, and Charlie Twaddle, 32
The Swedish singer married “the love of her life” Kiwi boyfriend of three years, Charlie, last month, although we only found out later.
Grammy-award-winning Tove – real name Ebba Tove Elsa Nilsson – who found fame in 2013 with her hit single Habits (Stay High), says she put fans off the scent by saying she wasn’t ready to get married.
However, she announced news of their July nuptials by sharing a snap of them from their wedding day, captioning it: “Oops”.
Tove said: “WHAT!? I’m a wifey!!! I never thought I would get married but then I met you, Charlie. Thank you for making me the happiest I’ve ever been. You’re my person.”
Margot Robbie, 30, and Tom Ackerley, 30
The beautiful Bombshell actress got all cloak-and-dagger when it came to doing her big day on the sly.
Three years after she met producer Tom on the set of 2014 film Suite Francaise, the pair covertly arranged their wedding on Australia’s Gold Coast and their 50 guests were told to wait at various locations along Byron Bay so a bus could pick them up to take them to the secret spot, which turned out to be a white tipi.
Wedding pictures emerged a day later (thanks to a pap who sussed out the location) and a few days after that Margot confirmed it by wearing an “I Do Down Under” T-shirt, and posting an Insta pic showing off her sparkler.
Margot said: “Being married is actually the most fun ever… I have a responsibility being someone’s wife, I want to be better.”
Rachel Riley, 34, and Pasha Kovalev, 40
Last June, Countdown whizz Rachel jetted off to Las Vegas to marry her dancer love Pasha in a move that blindsided everyone.
In true Strictly style, the pair fell in love after being partners on the show in 2013 and clearly weren’t interested in the faff of a big wedding as they eloped to Sin City.
It’s rumoured they didn’t even tell family or friends, so it was a day for just the two of them – and their daughter Maven, now eight months, who Rachel was pregnant with. Rach threw out the rulebook by wearing a mini red and white dress, then shared the news afterwards saying: “We both said yes!”
They said: A source told The Sun: “They did it in complete secrecy – most of their friends and family had no idea they were going there to get married.”
Princess Beatrice, 31, and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, 37
Most royal weddings have months of build-up, but after Princess Beatrice, daughter of Fergie and the disgraced Prince Andrew, and businessman Edoardo’s big day in May was postponed due to Covid-19, they secretly wed last month at Windsor Castle – and it was only announced the day after.
The happy couple had an apt “secret garden” theme, with Bea wearing one of the Queen’s amazing vintage gowns, and keeping to government restrictions of no more than 30 family and friends in attendance – including Her Majesty, Prince Philip and sister Eugenie.
They said: A source close to the couple commented: “I think because of everything going on with her dad, this [scaled-down wedding] was better in many ways.”
Cat Deeley, 43, and Patrick Kielty, 49
Despite rumours circulating that Patrick had proposed to his BFF (they knew each other from presenting Fame Academy in 2002, but began dating in early 2012), they both denied all talk of wedding bells, even when he was asked during an appearance on This Morning in August 2012 (just a month before tying the knot).
Cat later admitted they were so determined to keep it quiet that they code-named the impending nuptials as “the 40th” so nobody would catch wind.
They enjoyed a low-key wedding in Rome in September 2012, just a few months after announcing they were an item.
