RAISE THE BAR

Make your own pub at home like Amanda Holden as Covid-19 restrictions take hold

WITH the latest Covid restrictions making it difficult to go “out” out, it is time to bring the pub to YOU.

We have spent around £815million more than usual on alcohol to drink indoors since the start of lockdown, so why not sup with a touch of style?

Celebrities such as Amanda Holden, Scarlett Moffatt, Laura Whitmore and Cara Delevingne are leading the way, having created their own “pubs” and speakeasy-style bars inside their homes.

Here, interior designer Faye Robinson-Hey raises a glass to some of the best props for your bar, priced under £40, and also gives her top tips for creating your own cocktails.

You can grab a number of great deals to liven up lockdown
  • Pink gin glasses, £14 for four, George at Asda –
  • Pouffe, £39, cultfurniture.com –
  • Cocktail kit, £18, Primark –

START SIGN LANGUAGE: Pick out some quirky pub or bar signs to put your own stamp on your boozer.

Scarlett Moffatt has a glowing pink light sign saying: “Be a flamingo in a flock of pigeons.”

High-street store Oliver Bonas has a great selection of neon signs, or a £15 kit to create your own.

Alternatively, look on neonbeach.co.uk, made.com or bagandbones.co.uk.

GET ON YOUR TROLLEY: If space for a full-on tap room is tight, opt for a drinks trolley.

Drinks-on-wheels offers maximum impact on a minimum budget.

Go for bold with gold and place against the wall so you can add art or lighting to give a classy cocktail-bar vibe.

B&M and George at Asda have some cheap-yet-chic options.

GO GLASSY-EYED: Fancy drinkware is a must to make your home bar. From chic glasses to cool cocktail shakers, metallics and glass always work well for a high-end look – especially if you get your lighting spot-on so it shimmers.

The supermarkets are great for picking up affordable glasses, or look at websites such as wayfair.co.uk.

These trendy additions won’t break the bank — and they look great
  • Turn Me On lightbox, £14, cultfurniture.com –
  • “Bar” lightbulb, £29, Oliver Bonas –
  • Bar stool, £39.99, Aldi –

SITTING PRETTY: If you have the space, create a comfortable and stylish seating area. You need not spend a fortune.

Get a couple of pouffes to go next to your trolley or, if you have a built-in bar, get a few bar stools.

Argos, Aldi and cultfurniture.com all have some great options.

TAP INTO THE TREND: Gone down the “cosy pub” route?

It is not a proper pint unless poured from a tap.

Look on Amazon or specialist sites such as beerhawk.co.uk.

And do not forget a bar runner to soak up drips and keep your furniture free of ring marks. Try .

LIGHT BRIGADE: More is definitely more when it comes to lighting.

Avoid bright-white bulbs, though. A soft light is better.

And do not be afraid of variety, such as pendant lights, quirky lamps and candles.

Add mirrors to the wall, or mirror trays, which will reflect light and give your bar a decadent yet intimate feel.
