You could get married at McDonald’s as outdated rules on wedding venues are set to be scrapped
THINK you are McDonald's' biggest fan? You may soon be able to get married at the fast food chain.
If you dream of tying the knot over a Big Mac, your wish may soon be granted as has suggested couples should have a greater choice of wedding venues.
This could mean that you could also select your favourite Wetherspoon pub or local boozer if that is more your scene.
Currently, couples have to follow outdated laws developed in 1836 which restrict weddings in certain locations.
The plans to reform the laws surrounding wedding ceremonies first launched last September, and people had until January 4, to respond to plans.
At the moment, couples must have their ceremony at a place of worship or a licensed venue.
The Law Commission is hoping to expand this to include a range of other settings, including pubs, outdoors or homes.
Founder of The Marriage Foundation Sir Paul Coleridge said the changes could help couples on a budget who don’t want to fork out loads for their wedding.
Latest figures show the average UK costs a staggering £31,974.
Sir Paul said: "The Law Commission's exciting, new proposed reforms will relax many of the restrictions and open up the process so that couples can design their own wedding and tie the knot wherever they choose whether in their local church or local pub, a castle, a field or even in McDonald's.
"We hope and believe that this will re-democratise marriage and weddings and usher in a new era of simpler, pared-back ceremonies so that marriage will once again be for all.
"For far too long the perception has been growing that marriage is an out-of-date social arrangement reserved for the better off who can afford a lavish wedding and reception.
"Historically this was never so. As recently as only 50 years ago everyone wanted to get married, and they normally did, whatever their financial position."
In November, a couple held their wedding reception at McDonald's after their wedding venue was shut due to coronavirus.
Melissa Russell and Shannon McKenna faced multiple setbacks after a marquee in their garden went against restrictions, and the hotel they booked instead cancelled.
McDonald's worker Melissa, 27, told her boss about the difficulties the pair were facing.
She was stunned when Kate decided to come to their rescue and organise a wedding reception at her fast food branch in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire.
Guests had a three -ourse meal with Mozzarella Dippers or Chicken Selects for starters, anything off the menu for a main course, and ice cream sundaes served in crystal glasses, or apple pie and ice cream.
Currently in the new lockdown, most weddings will now be banned - unless there are "exceptional circumstances".
Officials will allow "deathbed weddings" - where one of those being wed is seriously ill and not expected to recover - to go ahead.
