Man who spent 10 YEARS saving up for £14k engagement ring labelled ‘a******’ by girlfriend for not buying ‘real’ diamond
PICKING out the perfect ring to ask your girlfriend to marry you is no easy feat.
But for one bloke it ended up with him being labelled an "a*****e" by his girlfriend, despite him spending 10 years saving up for a huge rock and splashing out thousands on it.
He decided to go for a lab-grown diamond as it meant he could pocket a bigger ring at a better price - and while his thrifty idea might have still set him back a whopping £14,000, his girlfriend wasn't having any of it.
So much so, that she slammed her boyfriend and threatened to end their relationship.
According to , the man shared an anonymous post to Reddit and looked for reassurance from others, following his proposal gone wrong.
He wrote: "AITA [Am ITheA--hole] for buying my fiancée a lab grown diamond and refusing to exchange it for a natural stone?"
"She was initially floored that I had spent so much but later became suspicious that I had managed to get such a large stone (3.6 carats) for the price, and asked to see the diamond certificate I got with the ring," he said.
The man explained that not only had the lab-grown diamond make more financial sense, but it had environmental benefits and he could be sure it wasn't a "conflict" diamond.
"Lab-grown diamonds are 'indistinguishable from natural ones' and [my] fiancé wouldn't have been able to tell the difference if I hadn't told her," he revealed.
Sharing his girlfriend's explosive reaction, he continued: "She called me an 'a******e' and went to stay the night with her parents.
"Since then I have received multiple texts from her friends telling me to just acquiesce and exchange the ring (and, ultimately, I will if it mean saving the relationship), but I just feel like this is something worth being firm on."
Looking to others for their advice, the man's proposal story seemed to divide the internet.
Some were in favour of the girlfriend, with one person commenting on his post: "As a woman, I can understand wanting a real diamond… That's just what we like."
Others, however, labelled the girlfriend "problematic" and said her reaction was a "massive red flag".
Agreeing, one more person posted: "What's going to be enough for her?"
