I’m a beautician – you will never look the same after fillers & getting them dissolved WON’T get your old face back
HAVING filler is no longer the beauty secret it once was - and for some, it's as normal as getting your hair highlighted or your nails painted.
But if you're considering having fillers, it's important to make sure you've made an informed decision first.
It's a real procedure after all - but if you don’t like it, you can have it dissolved. But can it give you your ‘old face’ back?
Dissolving lip filler is a treatment that can break down dermal filler safely and involves having hyaluronidase injected into the lips.
Dissolving treatment is often used for people who have over plumped their lips or have been left with lumps after overfilling or bad injection techniques.
Sharin Shafer, Founder of , a cutting-edge boutique aesthetics clinic in Chelsea, said the tissue and skin aren’t damaged after filler.

She said: “This is because Hyaluronic Acid (the principal ingredient in the fillers) is already present in the skin and it works by stimulating collagen production with zero side effects such as damage or stretching.
“But more people are getting filler resolved for multiple reasons.
“One is down to trends - in the past number of years, as social media promoted altering facial contours via fillers - think Kylie Jenner-esque lips - an increasing number of people sought to remodel their faces.

“Now there is a trend that celebrates a natural look, which is why we see celebrities dissolving their fillers, as well as their followers and fans.
“Another reason may be because the work done did not yield the results that were expected and so correction work needs to be done.”
The aesthetic expert went on to explain that in recent years, there has been dramatic advances in energy and laser-based technology, as well as treatments such as PRP.
She pointed out that these treatments can be used in tandem for the synthesis of collagen, which is one of the skin’s scaffolding proteins to create a more youthful appearance.
Using Hyaluronidase (the enzyme that breaks down hyaluronic acid) to dissolve filler can be used in emergency situations (occlusion), or as a planned procedure to dissolve the filler.
However, when asked whether you can get your ‘original’ face back, the founder of Skinfluencer had an interesting answer.
Sharin said: “When considering fillers, one of the key things to remember is that as you age, your facial structure changes due to bone and fat loss.
“Once this happens, you cannot use fillers to recapture your original facial structure.
“For instance, if you start fillers in your 50s, you cannot achieve the face you had in your 30s; rather you can only enhance the facial structure you have.
“But if you start fillers in your 30s you can use them to maintain the facial structure you have at that age well into the future.”
A great benefit of dissolving filler is that it allows the tissue to replenish, explained Sharin.
The aesthetic expert then said you can then boost tissue integrity through treatments such as energy-based protocols, lasers and PRP.
You can also look at reconstructing the volume loss at different depths.
She said: “In essence, the fillers restore volume lost through the ageing process; or if you are younger, you can cleverly place filler to enhance the facial contours and improve upon what mother nature gave you.
“We are seeing an increasing number of patients coming to us to ask for this treatment as they realise the future of aesthetics lies in using fillers to merely define and refine.
“The new approach is more comprehensive and lies in taking advantage of the technological advances in energy-based and laser-based treatments to transform your skin.”
Meanwhile, Joyce Carslaw, Founder of and a Skincare specialist with more than twenty years of experience, said filler does not damage skin or tissue if it has been expertly placed.
The fellow aesthetic and skincare expert explained most natural fillers last around 6 months before they begin to break down and absorb into the body.

Synthetic fillers have been made to last longer, some lasting as long as 18 months to 2 years. In the event of an overfill, some fillers can be reversed.
Dermal fillers made using hyaluronic acid (such as Juvéderm® and Restylane®) can be broken down with another injection called hyaluronidase.
But expert Joyce explained that people should keep in mind that the antidote eliminates all filler, so they’ll need to start from square one.
This can take between 24hrs 48hrs to dissolve and in some cases up to 7 days.
Unfortunately, for synthetic dermal fillers (including Radiesse and Sculptra), there are no antidotes. Instead, you will have to wait until the results wear off on their own.
Joyce added: “Of course, if areas of the face are overfilled, it can cause a lack of elasticity as the skin is stretched.
“When this is the case skin tightening treatments are recommended to tighten up the skin and help reduce lines and sagging skin.
“Botox may also be advised in some cases after a period of settling.”
But she’s noticed that a lot of people are getting filler dissolved - usually to rectify too much filler. The expert added that sometimes when the dermal filler is wrongly injected, it can cause complications.
She explained that ‘duck lips’ are a prime example, where it is visible that someone is experiencing a puffy or protruding pout due to migration of the filler on the gum line and above the lip tissue.
The impact of having fillers dissolved can have a huge impact on mental health as people strive to look younger longer and fit in with expectations that come from social media.”

Joyce said: “Ironically, this can also cause more ageing in this area as the weight and pressure of the filler brings the mouth down and causes overuse of the muscles around the mouth, which are compensating, thereby causing wrinkles, fine lines and lack of elasticity

But the benefit of dissolving filler is that you can achieve a more natural look, explained the skin care specialist.
When asked whether your face can ever return to how it looked before fillers, Joyce had an interesting response.
She said: “You will return to the face you would have had at the age you are when they are dissolved.”
She went on to explain dermal fillers are one of the most popular aesthetic treatments available and they are used to treat a variety of different trouble spots, including lines, wrinkles, under-eye hollows, sunken cheeks, and more.
With dermal fillers, you can achieve smoother, younger, plumper looking skin.
However, she explained that social media has resulted in an increase of pressure for people to get fillers and to get overfilled.
She said: “More is not always better. The best fillers provide subtle, natural results. Too much filler changes the shape of your face.
“Once injected, fillers don’t blend together, they actually layer on top of each other. Each time it’s injected, it adds to the previous product placed.
“This is important to note, as sometimes people bounce around different practitioners and not all are skilled at spotting a ‘filled face’, and place more filler on top of the filler, this can lead to your facial shape being altered.”
