I’m a home expert and the way you’re drying your clothes is RUINING your house, here’s what you should really be doing

WHILE some people air dry clothes to maintain the integrity of their garments, it might be causing more harm than good.

According to home experts, air drying clothes inside your home can ruin your house – but there are several ways to help prevent those possible damages.

According to Paul Gibbens, a property expert for , the moisture from wet clothes drying in a house can cause mold to grow.

“During the winter we tend to have our heating on more, and when we combine this with damp laundry, a lot of condensation is produced – not least because normally we keep our windows closed during winter, so there is naturally a lack of ventilation,” he told appliance brand .

“This condensation begins to seep into our walls, carpets, and furniture.”

He explained that with prolonged dampness, comes the possibility of finding mold in your home.

“Damp and mold can cause respiratory problems, such as coughing, runny noses and sneezing, which can potentially develop into much more serious respiratory diseases,” he noted.

So, how can people prevent mold from growing as a result of hanging their wet laundry inside their homes?

The experts at Beko revealed five easy ways to ensure your laundry is drying in the safest way possible.

IMPROVE AIRFLOW

“If you are drying indoors, place your rack somewhere with good airflow to avoid the build-up of condensation,” the Beko experts stated.

An easy way to do this is by opening a window for 15 minutes, which also improves the air quality of your home, according to professional cleaner Kacie Stephens.

INVEST IN A DEHUMIDIFIER

If you’d rather not let the cold winter air into your home, a dehumidifier is another option to quickly and safely remove moisture from your house and clothes.

Plus, dehumidifiers are known to relieve allergies, and one mom went as far as calling hers a “life-saver” for her sick children.

GO EASY ON YOUR WASHER

Many of us have done it: We stuff as much into our washer as possible to prevent us from having to do yet another load.

However, Beko’s experts said overfilling your washer “can leave your clothes wetter when you take them out, increasing drying time quite significantly.”

Therefore, they recommended filling your washer no higher than its limit.

USE YOUR SPACE WISELY

The experts at Beko warned against piling all your clothes onto a small drying rack or laying several items out close together.

“If anything, it will leave your laundry smelling of damp and your ironing pile higher than usual,” they noted.

HAVE A DRYER THAT WORKS

Tumble dryers are perfect for the winter months as they dry clothes quickly and effectively, no matter the weather.

“Purchasing a tumble dryer also means you no longer need to dress your entire house in damp laundry,” they noted.

And if you already have a dryer, make sure it works efficiently and you’re taking care of it properly.

For instance, in an interview with news.com.au, Colin Jones, an expert at Appliances Online Australia, revealed the exact way to clean a dryer.

“A general clean for your dyer should involve removing the filter, washing it under a running tap to remove any build-up of fine lint, and giving your dryer a wipe down,” he said, simultaneously warning against a viral dryer cleaning hack that could actually damage it.
