Flipping heck

I make £1,500 a month flipping car boot finds – I sold a £1 vintage jumper for £85 & an £8 retro play set for £350

SHE started going to car boot sales in 2019 in an attempt to make some extra money while at university.

But now, three years later, Becky Chorlton’s full-time business is reselling clothing – and she makes around £1,500 a month from doing so.

“I sell under the name Becky’s Bazaar and make approximately £1500 a month flipping my boot sale finds,” Becky said.

“It fluctuates month to month especially as the car boot season is during the summer months, so I also use vintage wholesalers to make enough money during the winter too.”

Becky has become a boot sale pro since she first started hitting the circuit, and has picked up some absolute gems over the past three years.

‘I’m a big fan of Formula 1 and love Nascar / Harley Davidson / racing related clothing,” she said.

I'm a car boot sale expert and here are 9 tips to make cash from your old junk

“Last year I found a super rare vintage Red Bull Biker jacket for £50.

“It’s worth over £250, but for now it’s hung in my studio as decoration.”

And Becky isn’t the only member of her family who has a keen eye.

Accompanying her on one boot sale trip, her mum spotted a “vintage Sweater shop jumper on the end of a rail for just £1”.

“It was an 80s jumper so was super colourful and had incredible embroidery,” she recalled, revealing she sold it just days later for an astonishing £85.

Another big profit item Becky picked up at a car boot was a McDonald’s playset from the early 2000s which was sold for £8.

She listed it on eBay and it sold just before Christmas for £350.

But reselling items isn’t a quick and easy job.

Get there early and don’t be afraid to get stuck in for a rummage

“It’s important to note that once purchased a lot of work is put in to each piece of clothing making sure it’s washed and ironed before being photographed and listed,” she explained.

Becky lists on sites such as Depop, Vinted and eBay, and stressed the importance of auctioning them off alongside some quality pictures.

“I always model the clothing items so customers have confidence in how something will fit on them and it stands out compared to other listings,” she advised.

“Make sure you’re honest about items and your descriptions are as accurate and specific as possible.”

If you are keen to try out boot sale flipping, Becky has some tips on picking up the best bargains.

“I’d recommend getting there as early as you possibly can!” she said.

“I tend to arrive as they’re opening as most of the good stuff goes early.

“However, you can still find some incredible bargains later on – especially if you’re willing to rummage.

“Sometimes my mum and I will go to two boot sales on a Sunday morning so we will be there for the opening of the first and the closing of the second.”

“I’ve sold some excess stock at my local car boot on two occasions,” she said.

Boot sales are also a good call if you want to try and sell some bits too.

“I managed to make over £400 each time.

“I would recommend bringing carrier bags and lots of cash so you have change available.

“Make sure to also have an idea of your prices (make it realistic and even label it if you want to be super organised!).

“Take pride in your stall and get equipped, bring a table or rail to display things on and to make sure items are easily accessible.
