In one scene, a young Princess Elizabeth beams in a red gingham dress as she shows the camera her engagement ring.

Taken while on the first extended visit of Prince Philip to Balmoral in 1946, the clip shows a private moment before the couple’s engagement became public.

The special 75-minute programme, produced to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, will be shown on BBC One on May 29.

Footage was discovered in the Royal Archive after producers searched through more than 400 film reels.

The Royal Family have often filmed each other since the 1920s. Hundreds of these reels have been held privately by the Royal Collection in the British Film Institute vaults.

The Queen has granted special access to the footage, which shows her life before her coronation as filmed by herself, her parents, and Prince Philip.

The then Princess Elizabeth, will narrate the story in her own words through recordings made before she became the monarch.

The BBC said: “This is an extraordinary glimpse into a deeply personal side of the Royal Family that is rarely seen.”

By Arthur Edwards

I WAS surprised and delighted that the pictures the Queen chose to share with us were in colour.

But it was no surprise she picked 1947 because it was a wonderful year, one of the happiest of her long life.

She was engaged to be married to the only man she ever loved and later that year she would walk down the aisle with Philip.

But in spring 1947 she travelled with her mother, father and sister Margaret on an incredible royal tour of South Africa.

As Elizabeth approaches this historic Platinum Jubilee, the world should be thankful we’ve still got her.

Long live the Queen.
