I want to name my baby after a colour – trolls say it sounds like a dog & I know it’s not a real name but I love it

BABY names are like Marmite – you either love them or hate them – there’s not often any in-between.

But one anonymous mum-to-be, who is from the US, took to Reddit and explained how she and her husband settled on naming their baby after a colour – despite realising that it’s not a “real” name.

In the post, she wrote: “I initially wanted to name my son (currently 5 months pregnant) Rex, or Sacha, but my husband hates both options.”

“The only name we can agree on, I don’t think it’s even a name, really, is Red.”

She continued: “As a couple we’re definitely on the weirder/hippy/creative end of the spectrum.”

“I don’t want to saddle my son with a silly name, but my husband and I both have unusual names and we’re grateful for them.”

The pregnant woman went on to admit that she likes how brutally honest the social forum is so was keen to get other people’s perspectives – and so asked their thoughts on the name, Red.

And people didn’t hold back when it came to expressing their opinions.

“For me Red isn’t a name. It’s a great nickname but I don’t think it should be an official given name. You could always do something like Robert (or any other R name) Edward and call him Red???” wrote one.

A second penned: “Red sort of feels like what you’d call an old hunting dog, in my opinion.”

A third admitted: “It’s a bit… lacking, on it’s own, but it could work well as a nickname.”

Meanwhile, a fourth added: “I’m not a fan, it doesn’t feel like a full name to me.”

“Maybe a name like Rufus or Rory that means something red related? Then Red could be a nickname? Just a thought.”

However, others told how they were fans of the rather unusual moniker.

“I like Red as a name and I think it’s fine as it is. If I were to turn Red into a nickname I’d go with Alfred. I prefer Alfred over Wilfred,” wrote one.

A second commented: “I like Red! I’m surprised to hear myself say it actually. But somehow it feels classic and timeless.”
