And a professional lip reader has revealed the monarch's words as she looked out over The Mall.

John Cassidy told Her Majesty appeared surprised after she stepped out this afternoon to hear a rousing rendition of God Save the Queen.

As the national anthem ended, red, white and blue smoke erupted over the crowds.

She then turned to George and, smiling brightly, said: "Ah, brilliant.

"I didn't know..."

The Queen made a short and sweet public return on the final day of her bumper Jubilee weekend.

She was joined for the three-minute appearance by Charles, Camilla and the Cambridges.

As Brits below sang the anthem, she appeared deeply moved, briefly biting her lip as she looked out over the crowds.

And an hour-and-a-half after heading back inside, Her Majesty released a statement to say she has been "humbled" by the support.

"When it comes to how to mark seventy years as your Queen, there is no guidebook to follow. It really is a first," she said.

"But I have been humbled and deeply touched that so many people have taken to the streets to celebrate my Platinum Jubilee.

"While I may not have attended every event in person, my heart has been with you all; and I remain committed to serving you to the best of my ability, supported by my family.

"I have been inspired by the kindness, joy and kinship that has been so evident in recent days, and I hope this renewed sense of togetherness will be felt for many years to come.

It comes as...

"I thank you most sincerely for your good wishes and for the part you have all played in these happy celebrations."

The monarch has missed two days of the revelries.

After experiencing some "discomfort" on Thursday, the 96-year-old pulled out of Friday's service at St Paul's Cathedral as well as the Epsom Derby yesterday.

But she made a surprise appearance this evening.

It comes after Brits and tourists cheered as the Queen appeared as a hologram in the Gold State Coach during today's Platinum Jubilee pageant.

Excited Brits waved to the image of the monarch as the 240-year-old horse-drawn coach made its way through the street.

Cheeky Prince Louis -  who stole the show at Thursday's balcony appearance - was spotted beaming as he saw his great-grandmother's hologram.

The four-day extravaganza to mark the Queen's incredible 70-year reign has today been rounded off by a Big Jubilee Lunch and the highly-anticipated Platinum Jubilee Pageant.
