TINY HOMES

We spent over £100k on two shipping containers for our teen daughters to live in the back garden

WHEN this couple moved in together they needed a home that would fit all of their kids.

Eventually, they found the perfect home but still didn't have enough space for the three kids to each have a private bedroom, so decided to add in not one but two container homes in the back garden for their teen daughters.

Matt told : "It gives our teenage daughters some autonomy and some space but [they're] still in the backyard."

Not only that, but once their daughters, Ashley and Maddie, move out Matt and his partner Linda have the option to move their ageing parents into the homes.

The shipping container homes set Matt and Linda back over £116,000, forking out £58,000 for each of them plus and extra £8,000 each on furnishing them.

The homes are connected the same water and electric system as the main house and the whole installation only took four hours from start to finish.

Although Ashley left for university after living in the container home, it meant the space was free for Maddie's friend Braedon to rent.

Both Maddie and Braedon have managed to make their container homes work for them, despite only being eight ft wide and 40 ft long.

Maddie is now also at university but decided to stay living in the container home.

She said: "Living on campus is something that I never wanted to do, I really like being around my dad, he's one my best friends and I couldn't imagine being away from him."

Inside the containers there's a living area with a sofa that pulls out to make a full sized bed for guests, as well as a large TV.

There's also a small kitchen area with a mini fridge, microwave and an induction stove, although Maddie admits she never uses it and takes full advantage of being a stones throw away from her dad's house.

"I never cook in here," she quipped, "I live at home so I go in there and use their kitchen."

Each container also has a decent sized bathroom with a walk-in shower and plenty of storage space.

The bedrooms aren't short on storage space either, the beds are raised so they can keep things underneath with built in drawers.

Both rooms also have large closets, which they've both filled to the brim with clothes and shoes.

People loved the homes, one said: "This a terrific idea, in this way the parents know where their daughters are, and they can be there for them in case the young women need them."

A second wrote: "Wow, the dad is a thoughtful and considerate man to bless his kids with their own tiny homes, and making provisions for both his parents and his wife’s parents if and when the need arises as they age."
