Inspiration for a baby moniker can come from anywhere, but lots of people often look to the time of year - with zodiac signs, birth flowers and other connotations frequently forming the basis for a baby name.

The baby name gurus at have collated the most popular name choices for babies according to their birth month, and we're running through them, along with the reasons they're so popular in that particular month.

JANUARY

Some months of the year can be used as they are for a baby name - and January is one of them. The abbreviated Jana is another option.

It's also the start of the year, so names that refer to newness are popular.

Neo, Nova and Kai all mean "new", while Prima means "first".

Capricorn and Aquarius are the star signs for January - with the first applicable up until January 19, and the second from January 20 until February 18.

Capricorn boys' names include Jasper, Gunner, Truman and Dante, and girl names include Natalie, Meredith, Nicole and Daphne, according to astrologer

While Aquarius boys' names include Michah, Conrad, Zephyr, Angus and Dominic. Girl options include Elenor, Aura, Verity and Alicia.

FEBRUARY

It's Valentine's Day on February 14, so romantic names are often popular during this month.

You could use Valentine for a boy or a girl, while Romeo refers to one of literature's greatest romantic heroes.

Violet is the flower for February, while Ash is the birth tree.

Or make a reference to the water signs of Aquarius and Pisces (February 19 to March 20) with a name such as River, Brooke or Lake.

MARCH

The third month of the year - Trinity is a nice reference.

Willow is the birth tree for March, while Daffodil is the flower.

Or why not reference the St Patrick's Day holiday with a name like Paddy?

APRIL

Another month that can be used as is for a name.

Daisy is the birth flower for this month, while Earth Day falls in April, meaning that Gaia is a nice option - it means earth.

If you want to choose a name associated with Aries - the star sign your baby would probably be under - Ari or Ariana could be good.

MAY

May, Maya or Mason are nice variations on the month's name.

Emerald is the gemstone for May, while the flower is Lily of the Valley.

Thomas means twin - referring to the Gemini star sign - while Gemma also references the astrology of the month.

JUNE

Rose is the birth flower for June, while Pearl is the gemstone - both of which are gorgeous names for little girls.

Or why not try a name which references the sunny and bright weather we often get in June.

AUGUST

Poppy has long been a popular name choice, and it's the birth flower for August - perfect if you have a baby girl born this month.

August or Gus are cute for a baby boy, while Jade is a birthstone associated with the month.

SEPTEMBER

Olive is the tree for this month, while Aster is the birth flower.

The majority of the month of September falls under the Virgo star sign, with Milo, Seb, Warrick and Frederick all Virgo names.

Baby girl Virgo names include Graciela, Winnie, Adara, Ciara and Serena. 

OCTOBER

Octavia and Octavian can be used as variations of the month's name, while Opal is the birth gemstone.

Rowan is the tree associated with October, while Mari or Marie are variations of Marigold - the birth flower of the month.

NOVEMBER

As well as being used in January, Nova can be a popular choice for November, given that it's part of the month's name.

Ember is another variation.

DECEMBER

Holly is the official birth month flower of December, given that it's the month of Christmas.
