NAME PAIN

I regret my daughter’s name – I can’t pronounce it properly & I’m worried she’ll get given nasty nicknames at school

CHOOSING a baby name can be one of the hardest decisions a parent has to make.

After all, the child is going to be responding to it for the rest of their lives.

But unfortunately for one anonymous mum, she's having major regrets and is debating whether to change her daughter's name, which is Violet, because she struggles to pronounce it properly.

Taking to , the concerned mum explained how she pronounces the name with two syllables (Vi-let) rather than three (Vi-o-let).

She also told how she's fretting that other kids may also pronounce her daughter's name with two syllables and start calling her cruel nicknames including "vile" or "violent".

In her initial post, the mum penned: "I have a baby girl called Violet who is two months old.

"My husband really loved the name from the start but I had some issues pronouncing it correctly, as I kept pronouncing it as 'vile-it' rather than 'vye-uh-let' due to my accent, which I worked on during the pregnancy and agreed to go ahead with the name.

"I love it when I look at the spelling and everyone has been very positive about it but I do find that when I'm introducing her or saying her name I am super careful about how I pronounce it so I’m not saying 'vile-it'.

"I've now started worrying about her coming home from secondary school and saying people are calling her 'vile' or 'violent', and how it'll be all our fault for giving her the name.

"I don't know if I'm just overreacting.

"The rational part of my brain is saying it's a totally normal nice name, the irrational part is saying what if she hates it and is bullied and we gave it to her and we should just have gone with something like Olivia."

It wasn't long before the post was flooded with comments, with many reassuring the woman that her daughter's name is "beautiful" no matter how many syllables it's pronounced with.

"For what it’s worth I pronounce it with two syllables too. That’s just my accent. I don’t say vi oh let, I say vy-let."

A second agreed: "It's a normal, beautiful name. Absolutely gorgeous. Right now you're massively overthinking it, so what if you say it differently sometimes?"

A third penned: "I wouldn't worry about Vile/Violent, those are stretches, and regardless if kids want to pick on other children they will find a way to do so no matter the name."

Meanwhile, a fourth commented: "I think you are making something of nothing. No one will have an issue with pronunciation or bully."
