Taking to his blog, Monty Don revealed the best way to care for your Christmas tree.

The usual varieties of Christmas trees include the Norway Spruce (picea abies), the Nordman Fir (Abies nordmanniana,) or the Colorado Spruce (picea pungens) reports the .

He said: “All three are very good, have specific virtues and can last for a long Christmas season if looked after properly.

“All three will also grow in most gardens if they are bought with healthy roots and planted carefully as soon as possible after Christmas.”

The gardening expert advised buying one with roots even if you don't plan to plant it and to get a large container to put it in.

He added you should fill the container with either sharp sand or compost and keep it moist by watering it.

But the gardening pro also recommended keeping your Christmas tree away from radiators or fireplaces as it will dehydrate the tree.

Monty explained: "Never place your Christmas tree by a radiator. It will respond by immediately shedding its needles.”

Find a cool, shady spot in your home if you want to increase the longevity of your tree, he added.

He also suggested using LED lights to decorate as they don't get as hot as traditional bulbs.

If you have purchased a Christmas tree with a cut stump, he recommended a tree holder with a reservoir to keep it topped up with water.

Finally, he added it should be treated like a cut flower, and to never remove the bark as it can cause the tree to dry out.
