People are only just realising what the tiny box on the outside of houses are for but some aren’t convinced

HAVE you ever noticed that some old houses have a tiny little box build into the outside of the house?

Reddit users have been debating what the function of the little box is and they've come up with plenty of suggestions.

user posted a picture of the bizarre contraption on the side of the house asking what it was.

They wrote: "This little box was on the side of an old house about the size of a small shoe box.

What is it?"

The picture shows a small square-shaped hole cut out of the house with a metal door that opens and closes.

While it was once clearly open, the box has now been filled to stop any air getting into the house.

The simply question started a lively debate on the forum and plenty of people shared their thoughts on what the box was.

One person said: "It's to clear the soot and debris from the base of the chimney or flue."

Another person commented: "Correct my old house had one. Became the outdoor ashtray storage place!"

"It's an ash trap," suggested another.

Plenty of other people had some more creative theories.

One person commented: "C**p l thought it was there cos they had run out of bricks."
