Washing machines should have a lifespan of 12 years - with A-rated machines usually costing around £350.

But according to RGBDirect if you put shoes in your washing machine it could “damage both the shoes and the machine.”

Their experts explained: "The tumbling action can scratch the washing machine's drum, and the shoes themselves may lose their shape or cause imbalances, potentially leading to loud vibrations during the spin cycle."

They say instead Brits should clean their shoes by hand using "a soft brush and mild detergent".

The experts also say you should never put backpacks or bags with metal parts in a wash.

They claim it "can damage the washing machine's drum and also harm the items inside."

And washing pet beds can also wear down your machine.

They explained: "Pet beds that have loose filling like foam beads or shredded foam should not be washed in a machine.

“The filling can clump together, causing imbalances and potentially damaging the washing machine's motor.

“Additionally, pet hair and fur can clog the machine's filter and drainage system."
