My number one fall gardening job needs to be done weekly or your lawn could die & it’s time to move your furniture too

To ensure your grass looks its best when spring rolls around next year, there's an important job that you should do weekly.

Lawn guru Steve Taylor shared his expert opinion on gardening during the last few months of the year.

His number one tip? He said: "Removing leaves from your grass is essential.

"Although they may seem harmless, allowing leaves to gather on your lawn will block out the sunlight and reduce air - two essential elements for your grass’ survival.

"A clear lawn also helps reduce disease caused by trapped moisture."

As a bonus, collected leaves can be turned into leaf mold, which acts as a soil improver.

Steve said gardeners should also make sure that they trim any bushes, shrubs, or trees that are blocking light from reaching your lawn.

This means your grass will be able to access sufficient sunlight to stay healthy.

It's also a good time to retire outdoor furniture for the season.

Expert Steve said: "Not only is it important to cut back your hedges and bushes, but it’s also crucial to remove furniture from your grass, especially during cold and wet weather.

"The weight and lack of sunlight can create unsightly dead spots on the grass and come spring, the affected area will likely have stunted and thinner growth."

If you were excited that the prospect of winter meant less time spent mowing your lawn, however, think again.

Steve said that grass continues to grow during the cooler months, so keep it trimmed - though no shorter than one inch.

The gardener said: "Compaction and thatch can hinder root growth and provide a home for moss to flourish.

"By prioritizing aeration and scarification, homeowners can unlock the full potential of their lawn's health and growth."

Having a lawn clogged with leaves makes it less likely that your grass will be green and refreshed come spring
