Received roses for Valentine’s Day? Here’s how to keep them alive for weeks

Thankfully, a flower expert has revealed some easy tips and tricks to keep them alive for up to two weeks longer.

And the best part?

You probably already have the products at home.

Millie Durbak, Brand Manager at , said: “Bouquets and boxes of roses are classic, timeless Valentine’s Day gifts that symbolise love and affection.

“But without proper care, they could end up wilting within a few days, which can be very disheartening.”

If you did manage to get a bouquet for roses this year, here’s how to keep them alive until the end of February.

POP STAR

One star product that can help keep your flowers looking their best is sugar, a budget-friendly hack Millie swears by.

Yes, you could use granulated sugar for the trick but it can be difficult to get it to dissolve.

Instead, the flower pro suggests using a clear fizzy drink like lemonade.

I’m a wedding expert and these are the flowers no woman wants to receive on Valentine’s Day - they’re just ugly and make us want to scream

“A touch of sugar can extend the freshness of your roses efficiently and fizzy drinks are a perfect source for this,” she said.

“Simply add a quarter cup of clear lemonade to the water in a vase. The carbonated sugary water not only feeds the roses with essential nutrients but adds a bit of sparkle to the flowers.”

Millie added: “Clear carbonated beverages such as 7-Up or Sprite are perfect for this trick. The sugar in these fizzy drinks nourishes the flowers and extends their freshness.”

WHAT A PILL

The flower expert also had an easy 10p hack you can find in the medicine cupboard.

She revealed that an aspirin tablet would keep the water fresh so that your budding roses won’t wither.

“This helps maintain the pH of the water, creating an environment that is less welcoming to bacteria and as a result, will keep your roses bright and radiant for longer,” she explained.

“As the bacteria growth reduces, your roses will last longer, accompanied by a sustained freshness that outlives the typical lifespan.”

These tips can make a difference, Millie stresses the importance of following a basic flower care regime.

She said: “Keep the roses away from direct sunlight and in a cool place. Change the water every two days and make sure your vase is clean to minimise bacterial growth.

“These creative and affordable hacks can indeed help your roses to last for a week or two longer than expected.”
