I tried every shade of the new Merit Signature Matte Lipstick – I love the old formula but these are surprisingly better
After years of searching, I've found the perfect nude shade
IT’S no secret that I love lipstick – especially Merit products.
I’ve thrust them into the hands of friends, thrown them into handbags and packed them on holidays.
Needless to say, when the brand announced the launch of a new formula, I was very excited.
The Merit Signature Lip Matte is a cooler, casual cousin to the OG Merit Signature lipstick, which has a glossy balm finish.
The range comprises eight new shades spanning from nude pinks to bright coral reds.
Formulated with hyaluronic acid, they have a hydrating formula that conditions your lips throughout the day.
I’ve tried all the new shades, so here’s what I really think…
Classic
Merit Signature Lip Matte in Classic, £28 –
As the name suggests, this is a timeless, flattering shade that would look as good on your daughter as it would your grandmother.
Similar to Millenial – which is my favourite shade of the original Signature Lip – it’s a pinker, rosier version of a classic nude.
Maison
Merit Signature Lip Matte in Maison, £28 –
Maison elevated my natural lip colour without looking overly bold or bright, meaning it’s a great finishing touch for a casual, put-no-effort-in look.
While it looks great on your lips, it could also be patted on to the apples of your cheeks for a natural flush.
Sunday
Merit Signature Lip Matte in Sunday, £28 –
I’m not usually a fan of pink lipsticks, as I find their bright, pigmented shades reminiscent of teen magazine freebies.
However, Sunday was much more flattering than I expected, thanks to its red base and matte formula. And, while I was terrified about removing this one, some micellar water (I used Garnier) and a microfibre towel were all I needed – no scrubbing required!
Equestrian
Merit Signature Lip Matte in Equestrian, £28 –
On first impressions, I was certain that Equestrian wouldn’t suit me. However, I just about pulled off this chocolate-brown shade due to how buildable the product is.
These formulas are easy to dial up, meaning any shade can be worn as either a subtle tint or a bold statement lip. I was only brave enough for a few swipes this time, but watch this space!
Vermillion
Merit Signature Lip Matte in Vermillion, £28 –
Vermillion has a gorgeous orange undertone, making it a fun, youthful take on the classic red lip. This shade would compliment a powerful blusher and darker lid perfectly.
I first tried applying it without lipliner, but quickly realised that using a liner is an absolute must, as its pigmented formula is quite strong.
Power
Merit Signature Lip Matte in Power, £28 –
This is my favourite shade by far. With its punchy, vivid red formula, it has all the merits of a classic rouge, but is toned down by warm, berry undertones.
If you’re still dreaming of Taylor Swift’s Super Bowl red lip (I know I am), then Power is the shade to reach for.
Court
Merit Signature Lip Matte in Court, £28 –
Whether you’re queuing at the office water cooler or lining up at a cocktail bar, this is the shade that’ll take you from day to night.
Unlike most matte formulas, which highlight cracks and dryness, this hydrating formula glides over imperfections and won’t dry lips out.
Antibes
Merit Signature Lip Matte in Antibes, £28 –
I’ve finally found the perfect nude!
Antibes manages to elevate the natural colour of my lips without being too orange.
You’ll have to top up this velvet formula throughout the day, as it transfers quite easily, but the results are well worth it. Mwah!
