As the days get warmer, having a garden to relax, work, or socialize in becomes increasingly desirable.

However, it can be difficult to know how to maximize small outdoor living spaces without sacrificing greenery or functionality.

Chenise Hinds cultivated her eye for aesthetics and functional design as a graduate assistant at the New York School of Interior Design.

She is now an interior designer, home stager, licensed realtor, and contributor to women’s magazine .

She told The U.S. Sun there are a few simple steps to upgrade a small outdoor space.

GREEN FINGERS

Hinds advised homeowners who have a balcony or patio to opt for plants and pots that “go vertical.”

“Hanging planters, wall-mounted herb gardens, and tall trellises with vining plants allow you to green up small footprints,” she said.

“Just be mindful of sunlight needs and wind factors. Shelving is also great for displaying greenery and outdoor accents.”

Beans, tomatoes, and zucchinis are among the vegetables that can be grown vertically, according to .

Hinds said it’s possible to get creative with plant life even in a small garden.

“Rose arches, stacked planters, and vertical veggie towers are great space-savers,” she said.

“Position taller plants like trees or large shrubs to provide overhead ‘green ceilings.’”

MULTIPURPOSE SEATS

The interior design expert said outdoor furniture should be practical, stylish, and a storage solution.

“To expand usable space, choose multifunctional furniture like bistro sets that allow for dining and workspace,” she said.

“Daybeds, chairs, and small coffee tables promote relaxation without clutter.

“Privacy screens and sun sails define the space while adding shade and ambiance.”

With thoughtful planning and purposeful decor, you can craft a tailored backyard oasis no matter the square footage.

DARING DECOR

Hinds recommended upgrading outdoor spaces by getting creative with decorations while taking into consideration the surroundings.

“Personalize with cozy lighting, artwork, mirrors, and pops of color in accessories,” she said.

“This transforms plain walls and floors into an extension of your interior style.

“Play with different plant types and container styles to incorporate the textures you love.”

“Most importantly, embrace and work within your outdoor area’s permanent elements, like walls and railings,” she added.
