I’m a dentist and these are the four at-home teeth whitening kits I recommend – there’s one you can eat ice cream after
You can pick up one of Dr Ferakh Hamid's recommendations for as cheap as £5
WITH professional teeth whitening costing thousands, it’s no surprise that Brits are turning to at-home solutions amid the cost of living crisis.
And luckily, some at-home products work just as well as professional options that dentists are even inclined to recommend them.
That includes cosmetic dentist Dr Ferakh Hamid, who champions safe at-home methods to get pearly whites.
A number of things can discolour your teeth: from food staining and smoking to genetics and even certain medications.
And while there are many DIY teeth whitening remedies floating around the internet, such as using lemon juice or baking soda, these can be harmful to your teeth and should be avoided.
Stick to dentist-recommended products for safe and effective whitening.
“Using at-home teeth whitening kits offers the convenience and comfort of improving your smile in your own space,” Dr Ferakh tells Fabulous.
“But choosing kits recommended by professionals is crucial because they use materials that are safe, work well, and are chosen for your unique dental needs.
“This careful selection helps avoid harm to your enamel and gums, lessens tooth sensitivity, and safeguards your overall oral health.”
The One for Sensitive Teeth
Dr Ferakh recommended the gels from SDI Pola for those with sensitive teeth, with them coming in various strengths and in day and night formulas.
He said the “gels stand out for their sensitive specific formulation” which has comfort in mind.
“The high water content and special conditioners significantly minimise sensitivity, making it an excellent choice for those seeking professional results at home,” the dentist says.
“Their range of peroxide concentrations allows for personalised treatment, catering to various whitening needs without compromising dental health.”
A four syringe pack will set you back £39.99, with pearly white typically achievable after two uses when you follow packet instructions.
The Viral One
You may have seen these on your social media feeds, and for good reason – they’re effective, cheap and accessible.
“Crest 3D Whitestrips Sensitive provides an accessible and effective solution for those looking to whiten sensitive teeth without the discomfort often associated with whitening treatments,” Dr Ferakh says.
“With a lower peroxide content, these strips are specially designed to offer significant whitening results over time, gently lifting years’ worth of stains.
“They are a testament to the possibility of achieving a brighter smile with minimal discomfort.”
A 20-strip packet will set you back around £30, but shoppers report being able to nab the six-stip packets for as cheap as £5 on TikTok Shop.
Debunking Teeth Whitening 'Hacks'
“Whitening your teeth at home is a safe option when using professionally provided dental trays and gels,” he said.
“Steer clear of DIY whitening hacks like baking soda, which can damage your enamel over time.
“For safe and effective whitening, stick to professionally recommended options that are gentle on your teeth.
“While a common social media trend, charcoal toothpaste can actually erode your enamel, leading to more harm than good.
“The key to a healthy, white smile is protecting your enamel, not wearing it away.”
The One you can Eat Ice Cream After
Enlighten Smiles describe their products as “no ordinary whitening” method – and Dr Ferakh is inclined to agree as it’s a top choice amongst dentists.
Users will get custom-fit trays for the best results and a gel treatment kit for two weeks to take home.
“You won’t need to change what you eat or drink, and the whole thing is designed to keep your teeth from feeling too sensitive,” he says.
“Waiting a day or two can significantly decrease the risk of staining, but if you’re craving ice cream immediately after, products like Enlighten are perfect for this.”
However, for this bespoke at-home whitening treatment, prices start at £500… making it a slightly pricier option.
The Easy One
If the idea of bleaching your teeth scares you, you don’t have to miss out on at-home whitening altogether.
Dr Ferakh also recommends the Sensodyne Toothpaste for Sensitive Teeth for those looking to “brighten their smile gently”.
“Its formula strikes a balance between removing stains and protecting enamel, offering a daily whitening solution that complements stronger treatments,” he says.
“Although the whitening effect is subtler, its benefits in sensitivity relief and enamel protection make it a valuable part of a comprehensive oral care routine.”
You can pick up a tube for £2.45 in your local supermarket.
