NAME SHAME

I found the perfect name for my baby but realised she’s going to have the worst nickname and be bullied – I’m mortified

She's already thinking of changing her baby's name

WHEN it comes to picking a baby name - many people forget to think about what nicknames they might be given as they get older.

And one mum who has already registered her daughter's name has revealed she did just that - and now regrets it.

Taking to social media, the mum revealed she had given birth to her daughter a week ago and had found the perfect name for her, Sigrid.

However, she was now regretting the name due to the nickname used with the moniker 'Siggy' - which she reckons sounds to similar to the slang term for a cigarette - 'ciggy'.

Spilling the beans on Reddit, the now- regretful mum shared how after much to-ing and fro-ing with her hubby over names, they landed on Sigrid.

She explained: "My baby girl is one week old and her name is Sigrid. My husband and I struggled to choose a name.

"We both had a favourite the other didn't like – mine was Ottilie and his Aubrey.

Now I'm worried she will get bullied for it sounding like cigarette

"Etta was our compromise name, but he soon went off it after birth. He mentioned Sigrid and I thought I liked it and agreed.

"Now I'm worried she will get bullied for it sounding like cigarette.

"My husband loves the nickname Ziggy or Siggy. Could Sisi work (pronounced Ceecee?) Also, we're not Scandinavian, although we both look it and my husband has Danish heritage a couple of generations back."

The mum was now having second thoughts and even had another moniker she was all set to change Sigrid for.

She admitted she's fallen head over heels for the name Beatrix and her hubby "may be willing" to switch their little girl's name to dodge any potential bullying she might face as she gets older.

Despite the mum's concerns - many people took to to the comments on the Reddit post saying Sigrid was a great name and that she was overthinking it.

One person wrote: "Sigrid doesn't sound like cigarette unless you've driven yourself mad worrying about it. Calm down and get on with your life."

Another commented: "I think it's a really cool name. I would not worry about her getting teased. I didn't even remotely make that connection or any other bad ones. I don't think children will."

"I knew a Sigrid and nobody ever made that joke about her," penned a third.

Meanwhile a fourth said: "I live in the UK and we definitely say ciggy the same as we would siggy as short for Sigrid. I love it but something would stop me using it."

"I really, really love Sigrid,” claimed a fifth.

Someone else added: "You're only a week into postpartum. It's natural to be a bit panicked in general. Give yourself time to settle in before you think about changing something as big as her name. See if it starts to settle in and feel more familiar."
