Stop ant invasions with an essential step – then sprinkle or spray 5 all-natural kitchen ingredients to keep them away
Ants are most active in warmer months
ANT infestations can be prevented using ingredients many homeowners already have in their kitchens, says an expert.
He shared little-known tricks for deterring the insects without using harsh chemicals.
John Stewart is a technical team member at , a UK-based company specializing in pest control products.
Speaking to The U.S. Sun, he shared must-try tips for repelling ants.
BLOCKED ENTRANCES
Stewart said ants can especially be a “nuisance” in the warmer months as that’s when they’re most active.
“Understanding their behavior and employing preventive measures is key to keeping them at bay,” he said.
“To stop ant invasions, it’s essential to eliminate potential entry points.
“Seal cracks, gaps, and crevices in walls, windows, and doors with silicone caulk or weather stripping to prevent ants from getting inside.”
ORGANIC REPELLENTS
Stewart revealed a selection of natural ingredients that can be used to deter ants.
“Sprinkling cinnamon, cayenne pepper, or black pepper along ant trails and entry points can disrupt their scent trails and discourage them from entering the home,” he said.
“Additionally, spraying vinegar or lemon juice around windows, doorways, and other entry points can act as a barrier against ants.”
He shared alternative solutions that are “effective” but must be kept away from children and pets.
“Strategic placement of ant baits and traps can help control ant populations indoors,” he said.
“Place baits near ant trails and entry points, but away from children and pets. “
SPARKLING SOLUTIONS
Stewart said ants are less likely to be drawn to a “clean and tidy” environment.
“Regularly clean up food crumbs, spills, and pet food residues, as these can attract ants,” he said.
“Store food in airtight containers and promptly dispose of garbage to eliminate food sources for ants.”
He said ants are also attracted to damp areas, therefore it’s important to address any moisture issues.
“Fix leaky pipes, faucets, and appliances, and ensure proper ventilation in bathrooms, kitchens, and basements to reduce humidity levels,” he said.
