But one gardening pro has revealed you don't need to spend any extra cash to keep your lawn looking its best.

Lawn fertiliser can keep your lawn in good condition and will encourage strong, dense grass growth.

Not only this, but it can help your grass recover from harsh weather conditions, so it's worth adding to your gardening routine.

According to the specialists at , one daily item you use in the kitchen could be the answer.

They revealed that your coffee grounds could be the answer to keeping your lawn green and lush - even in the upcoming heatwave.

The garden experts said: “Nitrogen-rich coffee grounds can be sprinkled on the lawn or mixed with water (about half a pound of coffee grounds to five gallons of water) to create a nutrient-packed lawn tonic."

And they aren't the only pros raving about the morning drink.

The lawn pros at Turf Technologies agreed: “Not only can coffee revitalise us in the morning, it can also revitalise our lawns.

“For us, it’s the caffeine that does the magic. For your lawn, it’s the minerals coffee contains - nitrogen and phosphorus - that does the magic.”

The caffeine itself doesn't stimulate growth, but minerals such as nitrogen and phosphorus found in coffee can.

Another added bonus of using coffee as a fertiliser over synthetic ones is that it won't damage your lawn.

If synthetic fertiliser is applied incorrectly it can reek havoc by burning the grass or contaminating the water, which coffee grounds won't do.

On top of that, coffee acts as a slow-release fertiliser, the opposite of synthetic ones.

“This allows your lawn to benefit from the nutrients for a longer period of time, ensuring greener, thicker and stronger turf for longer," the experts explained.

How to stop yellow patches on your lawn

STEVEN Bell, Managing Director of Paving Shopper, shared his insights on the true causes of lawn discoloration and how to maintain a lush, green lawn…

1) Sharpen mower blades

2) Prevent fungal disease with nitrogen fertiliser

3) Mow frequently

4) Aerate lawn with a fork

Worms also love coffee and will eat it up along with the soil which in return aerates the lawn to stimulate even more growth.

You can apply coffee grounds by throwing them on the top and letting them fall.

You can then rake or sweep it lightly to make sure there are no deep piles on the grass and spread it to distribute on more surface area.

Reapply the coffee ground lawn fertiliser every month or two after that to promote a thick, green turf.
