What causes under-eye bags?
Skin expert Georgina East said mild swelling or puffiness under the eyes is common.
She revealed several factors that contribute to the speed at which they develop:
“Aging: As the skin naturally ages, it experiences a loss of skin-firming proteins such as collagen and elastin,” she said.
“Lower levels of collagen create a loss of elasticity and tone in both the skin and underlying facial muscles.
“Sagging of the skin occurs, especially in the under-eye area where the skin is very thin.
“Genetics: Your genetic makeup can influence whether you’re prone to under-eye bags.
"Some people inherit a predisposition to develop them.
“Fluid Retention: Excess fluid in the body can pool under the eyes, making the lower lids look puffier and more swollen.
“Lifestyle Habits: Factors like lack of sleep, excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, and poor diet can contribute to under-eye bags.
“Sun Exposure: UV radiation from the sun can accelerate skin aging and weaken the supportive structures around the eyes, leading to bags.”
