I’ve been in a relationship with my STEP-SISTER for years – our parents say it’s ‘incest’ but we won’t split
Find out if it's legal to marry a step-sibling
A COUPLE who met after their parents married have said they won’t stop their incestuous relationship.
The man took to social media asking if they were in the wrong for staying together despite their parents being disgusted by their love.
Taking anonymously to Reddit, he revealed he and his step-sister, who met when they were ten, had been in a relationship for two and a half years.
“We don’t actively hide it like it’s something to be ashamed of, but we don’t bring it up either,” he added.
“Our parents didn’t know for a while, we just never got around to telling them to prevent it from feeling awkward.
“However, they finally found out around a month ago and they were P***ED.
“We tried as hard as possible to be calm and understanding, and assured them we weren’t doing anything irresponsible and that our relationship is perfectly healthy.”
“However, they just weren’t having any of it, and continued to be furious with us, and made claims about how our relationship was everything from incestuous to irresponsible to destructive, etc.”
Ever since their parents found out their relationship with them has been strained.
He revealed they both started dating once they were both over the age of 18 – adding ‘we are best friends who genuinely love each other.’
The couple had tried to reassure their parents but they weren’t having any of it he admitted.
He continued: “We talked to some of our friends about it and they said that while they don’t think our relationship is a problem, its unreasonable for us to think it could ever be okay for our parents.W
Now the pair were left wondering if they were in the wrong for expecting their parents to accept their relationship as they were both happy together and didn’t plan to split.
People were quick to take to the comments of the post and share their thoughts on the unique dynamic.
One person wrote: “I guess NAH but super creepy and gross. Spending about half your childhood as siblings and then deciding to have a sexual relationship is…abnormal.”
Another commented: “Nah but still icky and gross so prepare for a lot of judgement.”
Is it legal to marry a step-sibling?
While there may not be any blood relation in step-siblings there are still issues they can come across if they fall in love.
In the United Kingdom, it is legally permissible to marry a step-sibling, provided that neither of you are already married or in a civil partnership with someone else.
However, there are certain conditions that must be met. For instance, if you were raised together as siblings from a very young age, it might raise questions of consanguinity or familial relationship that could complicate matters.
It is always advisable to seek legal counsel to understand all the implications fully before proceeding.
“You have the right to date who you want, but I can sympathise with a parent thinking this is weird. Hopefully your parents will come around to be more understanding,” penned a third.
Meanwhile a fourth said: “You’re not related so it’s no different than if you dated someone you’ve been friends with since you were that age.”
“NAH but like…this is actually nasty. You guys grew up together as siblings, related or not. I’m not related to my stepdad but he’s still my f***ing dad,” claimed a fifth.
Someone else added: “It’s a little weird, but you aren’t actually related.
