IN FOR A PENNY?

Mum sparks debate asking how much parents charge their kids to live with them & some shocked she’d even ask for a penny

She had already spent "so much money" doing up her spare room

THE question of whether parents should charge their kids rent has sparked a big debate, thanks to one mum’s story.

Roxy previously asked her daughter to pay rent while living at home before she eventually moved out.

Roxy has sparked a huge debate on how much parents charge their teenage kids to live with them

However, with rent prices soaring, her daughter has decided to move back in – and her boyfriend will be around a lot too.

Now, Roxy’s rethinking how much she should charge this time around.

Taking to her TikTok page ’ she speaks to her 37.3k followers from the car to reveal what her thoughts are on the decision.

She asks: “How much are we charging our adult kids to live at home?”

The continues: “So my 21-year-old, I know I don’t look old enough but she has basically lived with the boyfriend for the last two years and she’s sick of paying a thousand pounds a month rent.

“So she wants to come home and save a deposit for a house.

“I’ve just spent so much money doing out the spare room and making it into a kids’ playroom.

“But I have said to her obviously that she’s welcome to come home and that’s fine.

“But how much do I charge her? Like I don’t need the money, but do I charge her anything?

“Her boyfriend’s not going to be living with us but he will be there a lot and they do eat a lot and I will become her taxi as she doesn’t drive. So what do I do?

“Do I take a little bit off her and then give it back at the end and say here that’s towards your deposit for your house? Do I just charge nothing? Like what do I do?

“I used to charge her £30 a week like when she last lived with me and she used to moan at it.

“And now she’s like, you know what? I can’t believe I moaned at £30.

“So I’m thinking, do I just charge her that or do I just charge her nothing like what we’re charging our kids? I don’t know.”

Not one penny. In this day and age, kids need more of our help than ever before

TikTok comment

The situation has divided opinions among parents.

Some believe charging rent is a good way to teach financial responsibility, while others feel family homes should be a supportive, cost-free space.

“Nothing, I gave birth to them, I just can’t,” one wrote.

“Shouldn’t charge them anything , the best thing would be to take a small portion of their wage and put it in a savings plan for them later in life,” expressed a second TikTok user.

Her video has gained a lot of attention with many expressing why they would never do it

A third wrote: “If they’re moving back in to better themselves, nothing”

“Not one penny. In this day and age, kids need more of our help than ever before.”

Whilst another added: “I personally will never charge my kids to live at home… I birthed them to look after them whenever they need it.

“However if she paid you before just charge a set amount at £60 for food maybe.”

But others agreed, and wrote: “My daughter aged 20 pays nothing because she’s a student.

“My son, aged 23 pays me £50 per week, which I think is a good deal considering he earns more than I do.”

Someone else said: “I’d say £250 it’s fair she’s still going to save for a deposit and you get help for the costs. It’s about being an adult and having responsibilities.”
