The pair chatted for a few days, and then Monami asked Mia's parents if he could take her to Manila with him.

"My first was that he looked Ok," Mia said.

"I'd never seen a black American before."

The pair have now been married for 10 years, and plan to get their vows renewed.

However, many still have concerns about their relationship, such as one of Monami's friends who said he at first thought Mia was his girlfriend's daughter.

When Mia and Monami first got together, his son Elijah was eight and wasn't fazed by the couple, however, as he became a teenager, things started to change.

Elijah has refused to come to the vow renewal, which will take place in Thailand, where the couple live, as he does not support their relationship.

"How are you going to know if when she gets the papers she will still be there?" he asked his dad.

"I don't mean to put a stereotype on you, but it's a possibility", Elijah added to Mia.

However, the couple aren't bothered by the judgement they receive.

"I'm fully happy in my life, I've found my life partner," Monami said.
