It's easy to make a bad impression on a first date

And while for many the gym is the answer, others are on the hunt for a relationship.

With dating season in full swing - and Valentine’s Day looming - one expert says getting it right on the first date is key.

James Preece, a dating and relationship guru at HeraHaven, said: “A first date can be both exciting and nerve-wracking and while there are many factors that contribute towards a successful match, avoiding some of the most common pitfalls can help too.”

James gives his top tips to help you date smarter in 2025.

Avoid Low Effort Venues

January is known as a month for hibernating, so it’s the perfect time to get out and a great excuse to get dressed up.

Putting effort into a venue choice doesn't require you to spend a fortune - but you want to demonstrate your interest, so coffee shops or a walk are big no-gos.

James said: “Engaging activities that foster interaction and create memorable experiences are key.

“Think mini golf, a museum visit, a picnic in the park, a trip to a Farmer’s Market or bowling.”

Don’t Forget to Flirt

Building chemistry is key to the success of securing a second date.

And a cheeky flirt to let your date know you’re interested is essential.

Nerve-wracking as flirting may be, the dating landscape these days can be cut-throat so it’s essential to create a spark straight away.

James says: “Try to maintain eye contact, offer genuine compliments and engage in light-hearted banter - all of this will signal your attraction.

“Without it, your date may wonder if you’re interested.”

Leave Negativity at Home

To create a positive experience, you have to approach dating with a positive attitude.

So the guru says you should avoid mentioning  any exes or dating horrors.

It’s worth leaving any work problems or any other stress in your life at home too, until you’ve forged a deeper connection.

James explained: “These topics can dampen the mood and also create an unfavourable impression.

“Instead, focus on uplifting and fun stories and try to find common ground.”

Getting Drunk

A little bit of Dutch courage never hurt anyone, but you have to know your limits.

On a first date you want to make a good impression so keeping your wits about you is important.

James warns: “Tipsiness can lead to loose inhibitions, loose tongues and even loose lips and while you might think you’re conveying the best version of yourself, your date might not agree.

“Stick to a couple of drinks on the date and don’t be tempted to get drunk.”

Not Following Up

Don’t miss your chance at love waiting for them to text you.

Like anything in life, if you want something, you have to go get it so if you like someone, let them know.

James said: “After all, the other person might be waiting for you to make the first move so don’t be afraid and reach out.

“The worst thing that can happen is that they might decline or even ignore you but this one passive dating habit could be keeping you single!”
