What is Wannabe about and what does ‘zig-a-zig-ah’ really mean?

The Spice Girls' iconic song Wannabe turned 22 this year and we've never known what the cheeky lasses were on about in that chorus.

The answer will no doubt surprise you.

One of the hit's co-writers revealed to the Daily Star that the line was inspired by a saying on set: "S**t and cigars".

According to the insider the saying was actually a nickname the band gave to someone who they were sharing a Shoreditch recording studio with at the time.

The co-writer described how everyone working on the studio was "much cooler" than the Spice Girls (impossible), with the likes of Orbital and Chemical Brothers in neighbouring studios.

He added: "But there was this one 80s pop dude who hated us for encroaching on what he considered 'his turf' which was boy bands and girl bands.

The hit song reached number one in 37 countries and its success catapulted the Spice Girls career into overdrive

"This guy had this nasty habit of taking a dump in the shared khazi while smoking a cigar, so we took to referring to him as 'S**t and Cigars'."

The insider seems to think the nickname buried its way into Mel B's psyche ending up in the lyrics - in a slightly more PG way - when she wrote them.

But "zig - a - zig - ah" isn't the only potentially controversial lyric in the catchy pop classic.

The insider also claims that Mel B allegedly references some of the band having sex while on drugs.

The lyric "You got G like MC who likes it on a... Easy V doesn't come for free, she's a real lady" we all innocently sing is apparently not so.

He claims that the real lyric is "We got G (Geri) like MC (Sporty) who likes it on an E" referring to the drug ecstasy.

But that's a wild theory nobody from the band has ever confirmed -  so we will stop there before your whole childhood goes up in smoke.

What are the lyrics to Wannabe?

Ha ha ha ha ha
Yo, I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want
So tell me what you want, what you really, really want
I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want
So tell me what you want, what you really, really want
I wanna, (ha) I wanna, (ha) I wanna, (ha) I wanna, (ha)
I wanna really, really, really wanna zigazig ah

If you want my future, forget my past
If you wanna get with me, better make it fast
Now don't go wasting my precious time
Get your act together we could be just fine

I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want
So tell me what you want, what you really, really want
I wanna, (ha) I wanna, (ha) I wanna, (ha) I wanna, (ha)
I wanna really, really, really wanna zigazig ah

If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends
(Gotta get with my friends)
Make it last forever, friendship never ends
If you wanna be my lover, you have got to give
Taking is too easy, but that's the way it is

Oh, what do you think about that
Now you know how I feel
Say, you can handle my love, are you for real
(Are you for real)
I won't be hasty, I'll give you a try
If you really bug me then I'll say goodbye

Yo I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want
So tell me what you want, what you really, really want
I wanna, (ha) I wanna, (ha) I wanna, (ha) I wanna, (ha)
I wanna really, really, really wanna zigazig ah

If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends
(Gotta get with my friends)
Make it last forever, friendship never ends
If you wanna be my lover, you have got to give
(You've got to give)
Taking is too easy, but that's the way it is

So, here's a story from A to Z
You wanna get with me, you gotta listen carefully
We got Em in the place who likes it in your face
You got G like MC who likes it on a
Easy V doesn't come for free, she's a real lady
And as for me, ha you'll see

Slam your body down and wind it all around
Slam your body down and wind it all around

If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends
(Gotta get with my friends)
Make it last forever, friendship never ends
If you wanna be my lover, you have got to give
(You've got to give)
Taking is too easy, but that's the way it is

If you wanna be my lover
You gotta, you gotta, you gotta, you gotta, you gotta
Slam, slam, slam, slam (make it last forever)

Slam your body down and wind it all around
Slam your body down and wind it all around
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha
Slam your body down and wind it all around
Slam your body down and zigazig ah
If you wanna be my lover

When was Wannabe a hit?

Wannabe was Geri Halliwell (now Horner), Emma Bunton, Mel C, Mel B and Victoria Beckham's first single as the Spice Girls.

It was released on July 20, 1996, and was No1 in the UK Singles Chart for seven weeks.

It was the first of six successive No1 hits.

The Spice Girls failed to make it seven in a row when Stop only reached No2 in 1998.

They then followed that up with three more number ones.
