FROM sprays and mists to mousses and creams, shops are now full of products for people wanting an instant tan.

But 50-year-old footage, which has been newly uncovered, is believed to show the first ever fake tan being used in Britain - and it was applied with a paint roller.

The bizarre old film from the archives of British Pathe shows Bond Girl Caroline Munro being slathered in a thick, heavy dark beige cream in Hyde Park in London in 1967.

Caroline, who was 18 at the time of the film, was on one of her first acting assignments and the clip was captured 10 years before she played Naomi in the 1977 smash The Spy Who Loved Me.

In the ad, the actress wears a white bikini as she emerges from the Serpentine Lake on a scorching day.

The narrator says: “Aphrodite the goddess of love just came out of the sea one day.

“The Romans agreed, but they called her Venus. Any day in summer you can see the British version come ashore at London’s Serpentine, but these days no-one is satisfied with nature as it is.

And even though fake tan products were launched 50 years ago, tanning expert James Harknett said they weren't popular.

James, who helped launch the St Tropez brand said: "Back in the day having a tan meant you worked outside and was associated with a different class.

“The browner you were, the poorer you were. However when Coco Chanel came back from the French Riviera, she had a tan and people said how nice it looked on her.

“So people thought if she's having a tan than it's OK for me to have one.

“People want an all year tan because it enhances what you already have, it can frame muscle tone, it can frame the bone structure.

"When you have golden skin you immediately feel much more lean and much more athletic. When you're tanned you feel great.”
