Peta Todd looks at the latest trend of ‘twinning’ with your children — and plans to steer clear of the ‘von Trapp’ look
The phase is a hit with Beyonce and Kim Kardashian
THERE is a trend at the moment for “twinning” with your children. Even Beyonce and daughter Blue Ivy, are into it.
But I am not 100 per cent sure if I love it or hate it. Is it a bit creepy or is it totally adorable?
I’m pretty sure it started in the USA, along with toddler stilettos and teen push-up bras.
Or perhaps this trend started with matching clothes for twins, then all siblings, then full family novelty PJs – which, for the record, I am a fan of!
But it’s one thing to all jump in bed as a family in the comfort of your home wearing matching plaid pyjamas, it’s another thing stepping out in matchy matchy looks.
It’s fine when the kids all dress the same.
I never thought I would be up for any kind of duplicate dressing when my youngest son Frey was born.
But I suddenly loved my brood of three sporting matching looks, despite their difference in gender and age.
But should we, as adults, be merging our identity with our children?
Obviously we are talking about appropriate matching outfits, not your Saturday night glad-rags.
I have to admit, I do own a couple of items that are the same as my daughter, but I have never mustered up the courage to actually wear them. I put them on and suddenly feel like the ultimate embarrassing parent.
And I can’t think of anything I’d want less than my mum donning the same outfit as me.
Recently on holiday, my husband Mark sported matching swimming shorts to two-year-old Frey and he loved it.
He adored his son being a mini-me.
But I just can’t do it. For me, it just has a little touch of a creepy, the same sort of feeling I get from toddler beauty pagents.
I don’t want my daughter Delilah to look grown-up and I’m too old to rock pigtails.
In fact I’m sure there is a rule that you can’t wear pigtails when you hit 30.
So I am going to steer clear of the “von Trapp” look for now.
