Mum claims to have the record for longest hair in Britain — at 5ft and 3in long
Monika Shah, 37, has been growing her hair since she left university 17 years ago
A MUM-OF-ONE says she now holds the record for the longest hair in Britain - after growing her extra long locks to more than five feet.
Monika Shah, 37, spends an hour washing her 5ft 3inch long mane once a week and over three hours drying it.
The real-life Rapunzel also puts hair oil in twice a week, which takes her over an hour.
But Monika, who has been growing her hair for almost two decades, claims her “silky” hair is actually less bother than most women’s hair because she never has to visit a hairdresser.
She is also determined to keep growing it so that it measures over six feet long.
She said: “I haven’t been to a beauty parlour in over 17-years. I can’t go to the shops without people stopping me to comment on how nice my hair is. “It takes a while to wash it but after that I don’t have to style it very much.
“It is too long to use a hairdryer so I have to leave it to dry naturally so that it doesn’t all get tangled up, after about three-hours it tends to be dry. Sometimes it takes a little longer but I can just get on with things as it drys.
“I started to grow it after university because I had always wanted to have it very long - but at university I did a lot of sport and swimming so it was not possible.
“It grows so quickly, at a rate of about an inch a month.
“I think it is because of my diet. I eat lots of healthy food like vegetables and fruit and nuts.
“My hair is very silky, it is in very good condition that makes it different from other people with long hair - mine is the best quality.
But Monika, a mum-of-one, admits that having hair that is almost the same length as her body does have its draw backs and she has to clip it up when she sleeps at night and kids pull it, the married accounts manager added: “Children tend to just grab on to it.
“I will be in the shops or collecting my little girl from school and then the next thing I have a child gripping on to it as a game. It does hurt.
“Apart from that I don’t have any issues, I haven’t trapped it in the door or anything but I might trip over it when it grows long than me!”
Andrea Colson, 33, who was born in the US but now lives in Micronesia, also has hair that measures 5ft 3inches.
But the world’s longest documented hair belongs to Xie Qiuping, from China, at 18 ft 5.54 inches when measured on 8 May 2004.
She has been growing her hair since 1973 from the age of 13.
Monika has applied to the Guinness Book of Records for the longest hair in the UK.
