TRAGIC LOSS

Mum speaks of overwhelming grief after suffering three miscarriages in less than eight months

Lauretta MacIsaac, 36, from Adelaide, Australia, says she would love to have another child as it feels like her family is ‘unfinished’ – but isn’t sure if she can go through the heartbreak of losing another baby

A MUM-OF-TWO who suffered three miscarriages in less than eight months has told how she grieves for each lost child as if they’d been alive.

Lauretta MacIsaac, 36, from Adelaide, Australia, said she would love to have another child, as she feels like her family is “unfinished” – but isn’t sure if she can go through the heartbreak of losing another baby.

Having already given birth to two healthy children – daughter Annalise, four, and son Jimmy, two – Lauretta was thrilled when she discovered she was pregnant again in January 2017.

But just shy of the 10-week mark, she experienced some unusual spotting and went in for a scan to check everything was OK – and knew instantly that all was not well.

She told : “It felt like a heat running through my head but my heart went cold.

“I had my two children's scans at 11 weeks and remembered what they looked like, and I knew straight away that this was wrong.”

Lauretta was told to go home and return for another scan in week’s time to determine whether she had miscarried.

But that evening she experienced a severe bleed, which she described as being like a “massacre in my bathroom”.

She recalled: “I made it the whole way to the hospital without flooding through, but the second I stood up outside of emergency it all started pouring out of me again.

“I waddled across the driveway with a towel wrapped around me like a nappy and straight into a wheelchair, then wheeled straight to a room.”

Devastated, Lauretta and her husband returned home without their baby, having been told the miscarriage was a “blip” and that they should have no problems conceiving in the future.

She fell pregnant again almost straight away, but in a tragic twist of fate at around 10 weeks, Lauretta suffered another bleed.

“My heart shattered into a million pieces,” she said.

“I didn't know if I would ever feel normal again. Two miscarriages in a row. It was extremely unlucky, we were told, but chances were that it wouldn't happen again.

“Finding out about the first miscarriage was so heartbreaking, but the second was the most traumatic thing I have ever been through.”

Tragically, history repeated itself - after Lauretta fell pregnant within the same month she lost her second baby, she miscarried a third.

She said she views her miscarried children as “lost souls” and grieves for every one of them.

Lauretta, who has a tattoo tribute on her wrist with each date she miscarried, plans to consult her doctor to find out what might be causing her to miscarry.

She added: “I want other women to know they are not alone and their body is not a failure.”

Last month journalist Lisa Francesca Nand claimed celebrities are right to break the cult of silence around miscarriage following Jonathan Rhys-Meyers’ wife Mara Lane's tragic loss.
