Ever wondered why Asda’s clothing range is called George? This is the reason
The supermarket's budget-friendly clothing line is named after an important person.
A VISIT to the supermarket these days means you can pick up your weekly food shop alongside a new outfit for your Saturday night out.
But have you ever wondered why the clothing range at Asda is called George?
Well the reason why is really simple.
In 1989, the supermarket decided they wanted to branch out into selling clothes alongside groceries and began to search for a designer to create the brand.
This was because Asda bosses realised that people were spending their money away from the High Street and in out of town developments such as supermarkets.
Asda then formed a partnership with George Davies, the fashion designer who was the brains behind High Street retailer Next.
And the supermarket decided to name their new clothing range after the designer, with the brand being rolled out to Asdas across the UK in 1990.
George continued his association with Asda until 2000 before parting with the company.
But despite no longer being a part of the supermarket, the 76-year-old has remained the name of the brand.
Since designing for Asda, Davies also developed the Per Una range for Marks and Spencer before setting up his own business GIVe in 2009.
