WHSmith is selling a very unusual advent calendar… and people are NOT impressed

THESE days it seems people have come to expect much more from their advent calendars than a tasty piece of novelty-shaped chocolate.

From make-up and beauty products to booze and cheese selections, stores have seriously upped their game when it comes to traditional cardboard countdowns to Christmas.

Even Greggs has got involved, offering up a tear-off token calendar that can be redeemed at the popular bakery chain between December 1 and 24 in exchange for a different treat every day.

Now WHSmith has thrown its hat in the ring, with a very unusual alternative - and it's causing a stir on social media.

The high street stationery giant is selling an ERASER advent calendar for £6, with a little novelty rubber behind each door.

And there's a special treat to mark Christmas Eve, as TWO erasers sit behind door number 24.

The festive calendar was spotted in a branch on Chancery Lane in London by money blogger and journalist Andy Webb from .

He posted a photo , asking the very valid question: "Why would anyone need this advent calendar? Surely this is a lifetime of erasers?"

In response, one Twitter user wrote: "My daughter's 'rubber club' (I know) in primary school would have collectively wet themselves over this."

But many shoppers were less than impressed, with one tweeting: "I was in WHSmith yesterday, I saw an eraser advent calendar for adults. I mean what fully grown adult needs 24 erasers."

Another Twitter user joked: "That’s one hell of a way to tell your kid he was a mistake."

And Retail Barcode dubbed it "Bad Christmas Gift Idea #16."

So, do you think it's a festive fail?

The Sun Online has reached out to WHSmith for more information on this unusual festive item.

Last week we told how B&M is selling PET advent calendars… and they’re a bargain at just £1.99 each.

Zoella’s £50 advent calendar has goods in it worth just £20
