A year in eyebrows: Celebrating 2017’s dodgiest eyebrow trends

THIS year has seen the humble eyebrow become the star of the show - but not all brow trends have been a hit with beauty fans.

From Nike ticks to Christmas trees, people have been taking inspiration from all over the place as they try to launch new fads and trends among the beauty community on Instagram.

Crown brows

Crown brows had their time on social media and it's all thanks to an 18-year-old girl.

Sofie Petersen, an aspiring makeup artist from Denmark, was the creator of the quirky trend.

For the regal look, she used some Vaseline and clear brow gel to spike up her hairs.

To top things off, she stuck some silver rhinestones onto the tips.

Brow braids

One of the more wacky brow trends has been braids, where people style their eyebrows to look as though they have been plaited.

To achieve the quirky look, all you need is an eyebrow pencil and some gel.

Although it may look like the hairs are braided, it's actually an illusion that takes mere minutes to replicate.

Draw cross patterns onto your brows to resemble a plait.

Set in place with the brow gel so the bold arches stay in place all day long.

The beauty trend has taken off on Instagram and hundreds of makeup lovers have attempted to re-create the braided eyebrows.

Metallic brows

It is not just styling the brows that has been popular, sticking things to them seems to have also taken off.

And one bizarre trend has seen people covering them in tin foil.

Make-up artists and beauty bloggers are reaching for aluminium foil, or any other shiny foil they have to hand, to stick over their brows for photos.

And the best bit about the look is most people already have foil for cooking and can recreate the look in seconds.

Simply cut a brow shape out of the foil, either in one big strip or tiny bits to stick on individually, and then get some eyelash glue.

Place the sticky residue over your brows and then artfully place the foil strips over to perfect the space-age trend.

If you aren’t keen to raid the kitchen cupboards, there are companies that actually sell the foil brows ready to wear.

Feather brows

The bold look of feather eyebrows involves parting your brows and splaying the hairs into a feather-like shape with the help of some Vaseline.

When Finnish make-up artist Stella Sironen posted a photo on Instagram with the so-called feather brows, she wasn't expecting her little make-up experiment to catch on.

But within a matter of hours the bizarre trend had spread, as thousands of others shared their carefully preened peepers.

Love it or hate it, there are now almost 50,000 posts on Instagram of people trying out the fad.

Double brow

Some forward-thinking women have realised that two brows just aren't enough - so they've been upping their brow count to four, or even six, in total.

The "double brow" and "triple brow" can be created easily enough - and you'll be relieved to hear that you won't need any extra hair to bring them to life.

Instead, the extra eyebrows can be pencilled on, with some make-up pros going to extreme lengths to make the bonus brows look more realistic.

In most cases, a quick glance is all it takes to realise which brow is real, and which ones are impostors.

But some beauty fanatics have made it surprisingly tricky to work out which of the trio of brows is the original pair.

Pictures shared on Instagram show the wacky trend in action, and a surprising number of people have already subscribed to the idea of the "triple brow".

Carved up

Some fashionistas have been opting for the carved eyebrow look, which involves framing the face with bold lines.

The new trend stemmed from US makeup artist Alexa Link, who has more than 33,000 followers on Instagram.

But thankfully you don’t have to be a professional to copy the look.

To replicate the carved craze, take a pencil eyeliner and trace the outline of your eyebrows.

Stop the line looking harsh by blending it with eyeshadow – which you can make as bright or smoky as you like.

You still want it to be defined though, so use concealer to clear up smudges.

McEyebrows

This was a joke trend started by beauty guru and YouTube star Huda Kattan.

But her take on McDonald's eyebrows appears to have caught on with her millions of followers wanting to recreate the bizarre look.

To replicate McDonald's iconic golden arches, she erased her natural brow shape with concealer.

Next, she used a pencil to draw the M-like design across her forehead.

After completing her makeup, Huda remarked: "I'm really loving this, this is definitely the peak of the eyebrow trends."

Squiggle brows

Another trend beauty bloggers and make-up artists have been showcasing is “squiggle” eyebrows with their brows shaped in wavy lines.

One of the trendsetters was beauty influencer Promise Tamang, who uploaded her take on the look to Instagram.

She said she used washable PVA Glue to "flatten" her brow hair "all in one direction."

Then she used full coverage concealer to hide her hair, and then used powder to fully erase her brow from sight.

To draw on the funky wavy lines, she used black gel liner mixed with brow pomade formula.

Dragon brows

This bold look involves carefully shaping your brow hairs into six little triangles, using a brush or spoolie, so they look like the spikes on a dragon's back.

They are then fixed into place with hair gel or eyelash glue.

OTT brow extensions

Eight years after Cara Delevingne's naturally thick brows first captured the world's attention back in 2011, no one knew the obsession with eyebrows that waited ahead.

Fast forward nearly eight years and it's a multi-million pound industry with people going to extreme lengths to get show-stopping brows - including this girl.

The unnamed woman features in an of the internet's dodgiest eyebrows, but stood out thanks to her innovative approach to get 'wow brows' with just a hair extension and a tube of eyelash glue.

In the photo she gives her best pout, and looks downwards to show off her equally luscious lashes.
